Reflective practice is key to coping with turmoil and stress (Caldwell & Grobbel, 2013) by reflecting on experience, nurses can rationalise emotional or practical issues.
Although difficult for some nurses, in a supportive environment, Fukada & Okuda (2014) found it to enhance emotional support from colleagues, confidence in autonomous work and the ability to draw conclusions on new ideas and ulterior perspectives.
For nursing students, reflection serves as way to prepare one for their placement and serve as a reminder of the emotional patient/nurse relationship often forgotten due to the emphasis on the physical tasks in assessment (Bulman & Schutz, 2013).
Han & Kim (2014) looked at key personalities within the nursing by using the same Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), I used. They identified that nurses’ need traits that allow for understanding of others and an understanding of self to be effective in their practice.
Out of the sixteen personality styles, I am considered ESFJ; extroverted, sensing perception, feeling and judging. Certain strengths of ESFJ people resonated with me including, a preference for practical work, cooperative and empathic nature.
