Reflective Practice Reflection: Reflecting on the experience of a person who is incontinent.
Time and date: May 5th 2012 Pat is a patient where I am doing my work experience in a nursing home. I introduced myself as one of his carers sat down beside him I made sure he was comfortable I introduced myself and asked was it ok to sit down beside him maintaining good eye contact and speaking in a low friendly tone of voice.
Thinking and feeling: I felt that I was able to talk to Pat and I made sure that I gave him plenty of eye contact while I was talking to him as I was taught that this in my communication training. I feel that I got a good response as pat was chatty, friendly, and appeared at ease in my company I feel that it is important

    For the one-to-one interaction I played dominoes with resident A in the dining room after they finished dinner whilst some of the other residents were asleep. Whilst I played dominoes with resident A, I used different communication skills like listening and showed that I was listening by giving head nods and smiled at resident A. I also used non-verbal communication such as eye-contact with resident A, I felt that this worked because the resident was nodding and that showed me that they were listening and understood me. I spoke slowly and clearly with resident A so that they could hear and understand me and I knew that the resident could hear and understand me because they responded straight away and wasn’t asking me to repeat myself. During the game of domino 's I asked resident A questions, such as "did you enjoy dinner?", "are you ok?" I feel like this made the resident feel more comfortable around me. There was the use of silence when we were playing dominoes but it only lasted a few seconds. After we had finished a few games of dominoes I got up and patted resident A 's shoulder and said "well done". The proximity between me and the resident was good because the resident could hear me clearly and I knew this because they were replying back to me straight away and I didn’t have to repeat myself several times.…

    As myself and the patient have been in contact many times before it was appropriate to speak and use informal body language, by this I had a good but relaxed posture when I came in and sat down (legs crossed). I made sure to sit at an angle as this would be an informal visit to make the service user feel relaxed and comfortable so that he could share sensitive information with ease. So when he told me he had some bad news my eye contact with him became stronger and my facial expressions changed to show I was listening carefully, when he then told me that he had heart disease my expression on my face changed to show I cared and could empathise, also my tone of voice got softer and my voice was slightly quieter.     Reflective practice is something we all carry out every single day, probably without even realising it. We use reflection in many different situations and under many different circumstances, as a way of improving our own skills and abilities for different things, as individuals. Cowan proposed that learners are reflecting in an educational way, “When they analyse or evaluate one or more personal experiences, and attempt to generalise from that thinking” (1999: 18). Reflective practice allows us to look at something we have carried out and allows us to see whether or not we handled the situation properly or whether we would handle it differently if we were giving the opportunity to do it again. By doing this reflecting enables you to see how you have improved in certain areas and pinpoint areas which may need some improvement. It’s basically a way of seeing what you have learnt and perhaps shedding light on what could be done in the future.     What is reflective practice? In short, it’s a practice that helps you become an active learner. Many of us, including myself, may be considered or interpreted as passive learners. Passive learning goes a bit like this: we read textbooks, we follow everything our instructor or teacher tells us (sometimes we tune out), we write exams and then…we forget what we learned. It’s common and though not everybody goes through this, historically, it happens more often than not.     With this I chose a game from the LSIS workshop that will help me as well to feel more confident in that area again. I also wanted to challenge my learners a different way than just questioning so I introduced a fun muscle game. I first found a great facial muscle diagram (Bodyteen.com Anatomy 2012) that I always think is a great way to see where the muscles are, seen on Appendix 1. I put my learners in to groups of three, they had a list of ten facial muscles, post -it notes and a pen.
