Reflective Writting
Coming into preparing for my paragraph I had three goals; make a strong a valid point, answering all of the possible questions a reader may have, and having a structured well developed paragraph. I wanted to maitain these goals throughout the writing process. I had to do minimal research becasuse I was familiar with the topic. There are three reasons why I chose to write about the qualities it takes to be a firefighter. First, I was able to choose the topic that I was most comfortable with. Second, I knew a lot about the efforts it takes to becoming a firefighter. I had a lot of outside information that most people would not get by simply using google. Finally, I felt for the first time, that I organized my writing in such a way that the message was clear and my opinion was supported with facts and life experiences. By doing this parargraph, I learned that it was important to have an organized outline, facts that support my position and details that enhance the message. It was a very long process for online one single paragraph but it allowed me to get several peer edits and other peoples opinions to make it an exceptional reading. Allowing my peers to look at my rough draft and make corrections or suggestions was a great and simple way for me to enhance my brain into creating structure. It also allowed me to interact with my classmates and brain storm. Overall it was well drawn out process and beneficial experience. I was able to maintain my goals throughout the process and learn some new techniques and develop them into my writing.

Throughout the process of writing this comparative essay, I felt that the most important task was to analyze and describe the conventions that separated the genres that were discussed. I organized my paper so that a reader with no knowledge of the genres would be able to read it and gain a basic understanding of both genres before I began contrasting the genres. By completing this essay I feel that I have obtained a sufficient understanding of the writing strategies that we first discussed in class. I am especially glad that we discussed how to read like a writer because I feel that reading analytically is one of my strengths and the class discussions helped me to understand my strength in this aspect. However, I feel that I still have much to learn in terms of establishing credibility because of I still do a poor job of incorporating sources smoothly in my paragraphs. In this specific paper, my paragraphs were clear and concise; I feel that readers would not be confused at any point of what my purpose is. My peers who reviewed my paper agreed that the strength of this essay was its clarity. The hardest part of completing this essay for me was picking two genres that could be compared in-depth and also finding examples to incorporate as evidence. The two genres I chose to write about in my project builders were bad examples to use and therefore I had to select new genres and examples to write about right before the first draft of the writing project. If I had more time, I would’ve spent more timing researching examples to use as evidence because I feel that my essay lacks in well-incorporated quotes. When it is time to edit this writing project for the final portfolio I plan to spend a lot more time finding reputable sources and using the right context to transition into the selected quotes without any awkwardness. Organisational change and development theory suggests that models are a good way of providing change practitioners with strategies to plan, implement and move through various stages of change (Waddell, Cummings & Worley, 2007). While it is arguable that models are useful in providing guidelines for change practitioners, I feel that they are not necessarily an accurate representation of how change is actually experienced in organisations. I have worked in an organisation that has been through repeated change throughout the duration of my employment. My experience of change has been somewhat different from how it is reflected in change models. For example, as an employee I have not been involved in the initial planning stages of change, nor have I been involved in diagnosis at an individual level, therefore I am unclear as to what happens during these stages. From an individual perspective, it feels as though change is planned and implemented in my organisation at the senior levels of management without adequate input or information to and from staff. Further, from my perspective, change is not experienced in a smooth manner as suggested by change models. I have experienced change that has not appeared to move beyond the unfreezing stages (Lewin, 1947), and I have also experienced change that has regressed at different stages rather than move forward. Writing is always difficult and takes a long time, this is my first impression about any writing class. Not only because of its techniques, but also the language was a big obstacle.
