Regional Food Bank Observation
The place where I conducted my community service was the Regional Food Bank. The Regional Food Bank receives large quantities of foods, drinks, and other necessities from suppliers throughout the northeast, such as Hannaford or Wal-Mart. Then, at the Regional Food Bank, all of the goods that came in get checked to make sure they aren't expired or have ripped packaging, which means that they can get sorted into boxes to be sent off to families in need or to homeless shelters. The Food Bank provides over 30 million pounds a year of food to 1000 different agencies. Each box at the Food Bank can only weigh 45lbs, so that means that around 660,000 boxes of food are sent. Furthermore, what also makes this so amazing is that the Food Bank is a non-profit …show more content…
The first time I went all I did was tape and form boxes for food to be stored in. It didn't seem like an important job, but without the boxes there's nothing to put the food in, and ship it off in, so without the boxes, the job is impossible. The next time I went I sorted the goods. There are very specific rules there because the people and families receiving the food need to know exactly what they are getting. I mainly dealt with sorting the meat and packaging that up to send out. After the boxes were filled, I had to weigh it to make sure it was somewhere between 43-45lbs, and then close the box to ship it. The third time I went to the food bank, I helped take the food and drinks out of the boxes that they came in from the manufacturers. I had to decide whether or not it was good quality, I had to check the expiration date, and I had to make sure the packaging was sealed. The hardest part of these tasks was when I first started to do them. It took a couple minutes to get the routine down, but once I did, it became repetitive and pretty easy. Since the work is very repetitive, it can become very boring, very fast. However, I knew this so I made sure I went with a friend, and I realized that volunteer work can be fun if you do it with people you know. Also, I made a game out of it to see who could sort the most goods/tape the most

As a volunteer, you must have the desire to serve others and to forget about your needs when helping others. Yes, you may be going thru at home or at work, but when volunteering your issues are as not as big as the people who have humbled themselves to request help. The philosophy of the KRC Food Pantry directors is, “Give a person a fish sandwich and you will feed them for the day. Teach a person how to fish and they will continue to feed themselves for a life time.” Part of the services provided in addition to the food boxes are job search, clothing for interviews, resume writing assistance and much more.…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

Once a month, our organization, Ketchikan CPOA helps the local Salvation Army Soup Kitchen prepare meals, serve and clean up, I have dedicated three years of monthly service to helping plan, prep, and cook and serve the citizens of Ketchikan, AK who need it. This service has had a profound effect on my life. The most memorable time I can recall was my first time attending the soup kitchen. I enjoyed meeting the staff at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, working with my fellow Coast Guard men and women to prep the meal, and to meet the patrons who attended breakfast that day.…

The place that I decided to volunteer at was the St. Thomas Church Pantry. The purpose of this service is to get food to people who have fallen upon tough financial times. One business skill that this group needs to keep the food pantry running is marketing skills. One of the struggles that food pantries have is not getting enough food donations of items they need. So, the leader of the pantry must ask for donations of the items that they run low on. This also means that the volunteers at the Pantry must take inventory on food items to ensure that they will not run out of certain food items. Also, they have to have a volunteer schedule just like most businesses this is to ensure that at least two volunteers will be working during the two days of the week that the Pantry is…

Since eighth grade I have volunteered regularly at Prodisee Pantry, a local food bank that gives out boxes of food every week. Prodisee was the first place I volunteered on my venture. Then I started to serve at my old middle school on Tuesdays, usually in the science department where I could offer the most assistance. From there I began leading a small group for middle schoolers at one of my churches on Wednesday nights. However, that was the extent of my service for the first two months of the year, but soon I did something completely new to remind me of the purpose of the 365…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

Apart from the heavy lifting, I was allowed to take care of animals and learn about them. It is an interesting experience seeing 20 bunnies all together in a pen and it was fun to watch over them. I had done other community service in the past where I would just pick up trash or watch over children. It was tedious work. I am not inclined to work that is repetitive nor uninteresting as it is not as exciting. Working in a bunny shelter allowed me to help in a variety if actions and at a time, even teaches me something informative. I find that it is what community service should have, something that impacts the helper in a positive manner. For other future service hours, I would ideally do something that involves a skill I have and I am good in such as something which would involve my artistic skills or scientific knowledge. One example would be teaching children to draw and paint at an after school program. Another is a service project that anyone can do which would be taking care of the wildlife and greenery in the urban city. This would require my knowledge on ecology. This would also be attracting to me because I am interested in plants and taking care of them. My last example would be washing graffiti from the walls of Fountain Valley. I had found out that our city has a goal of getting rid of graffiti in 3 days and they apparently spend much money on getting rid of them. If I and a group of people were to go out and wash the graffiti away, it would help the city council deficit budget and in turn, help the city…

    The Ultimate Service

Community service allows one to possess the heart-warming feeling of happiness and thankfulness. Regardless of how big or long the service is, the feeling of gratitude envelops the body and creates a new positive perspective. For example, back in November 2009, I performed community service with my cousin Kristy and her church. We drove out to Los Angeles, entered a compact church, and set up food to feed the homeless. While others set up tables and chairs, my cousin and I helped the older women prepare food. Together we made Korean barbeque, rice, and several side dishes. Once we opened the doors, I was appalled at the number of homeless people that lived in Los Angeles. While the countless number of people began to form a line, I slowly scanned each individual only to end up feeling a little melancholy. They were dirty, scrawny, withered down, and weak. I wanted to help. Unfortunately there was no way I could fix the homeless’ situation. As a result, I did the next best thing and talked to them after serving them a full plate of food. I had the opportunity to…
