In the early 1800s, America changed in a lot of ways in a short amount of time. The change that occurred was, for the most part, the result of the industrial development. The industrial advancements in the early 1800s had a huge amount of consequences, both positive and negative. But the industrial development from 1800 to 1860 affected the North and the South in hugely different ways. The prominent differences eventually caused an amazing amount of tension between the two regions as they moved in completely separate directions. Mainly, the North and the South differentiated when it came to cultures, economies, and political views.…
One of the main factors for this swap in sectionalistic/nationalistic feelings throughout the country was the beginning of the industrial revolution. Before the Industrial Revolution, some New Englanders even talked about leaving the Union during the Hartford Convention. After the Industrial Revolution, the North’s place in the Union would be stronger then ever. The industrial revolution caused many northern cities, such as Boston, major economic growth. While previously the New England colonies’ economies were not as strong as the South, the North overtook the South in economic terms. Factories sprung up and manufacturing became a major part of the economy. Unlike the North, the South was not as greatly effected by the Industrial Revolution. They remained in their agrarian economy even as the North advanced. This caused a divide between the amount of railroads and factories between the North and South. The South began to lag behind the North in economic growth. The roles that had been set in the 1810’s had been reversed. Now the South wanted to secede from the United States.…
Female characters are often absent in SF as there is rarely any need for romance. In the portrayal of Carmen in Starship Troopers, the body does not automatically make a character masculine or feminine. Given the lack of real women, feminine substitutes may fill the void, these substitute figures connecting the narrator of The War of the Worlds and Juan to their femininity before being eradicated or accepted. In The War of the Worlds, the curate shows up just as the narrator thinks about his wife. He is described with a ‘thin white hand’(70) and ‘almost a complaining tone’(70), both feminine traits. Arguably he becomes the replacement of the narrator’s wife, requiring the narrator’s protection and reassurance. This is what the narrator does with his wife…
Since the time of British colonization in the New World, sectionalism had played a major role in American politics. Differing geographies and climates had lent to development of varying types of economies. While he north dominated shipbuilding and trade, the South became dependent on the exploration of cotton, rice, tobacco, and indigo for revenue. Such contrasting economies ultimately led to different attitudes towards the welfare of the nation, particularly those which involved slavery, and views most often fell along sectional lines. Individuals such as Crawford, Calhoun, Clay, and Webster advocated for their individual regions, while still hoping to advance in the national goal. However, by the early 1860s, it became clear that compromise was no longer a viable solution. Sectional tensions surrounded the civil war, and the role of the federal government would greatly change in terms of race relations and economic development during the period between 1861 and 1877.…
Northern neglect was one of the reasons that had ended Reconstruction. “Weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and ‘sick of carpet-bag’ government… North began to turn against Reconstruction policies” (Littell). The North grew tired of trying to get the South to help Freedmen. In an article called The Death of Reconstruction: Race, Labor and Politics in the Post-Civil War North, 1865-1901, by Heather Cox Richardson, she wrote about how blacks were uncivilized people. They assumed it would take time for ‘them’ to learn the methods of the white people. Northerners started to focus on their own concerns such as the Panic of 1873, which was the loss of millions of jobs; even the president turned away from the problems of Reconstruction.…
From the years 1800-1850 the nation was full of battles and prosperity. Territorial expansion was a cause in most of the battles, but also gained prosperity for the nation. There were many impacts on national unity between those time periods, but the main impact was territorial expansion. This is true because of the Louisiana Purchase, the purchase of Oregon territory, and the Mexican War.…

Reconstruction was a period of time where many challenges were faced, during the years 1865-1877. On the one hand, some argue that African Americans deserved to have freedom in America. On the other hand, however, others argue that Southerners didn’t agree with giving African Americans their freedom. Reconstruction changed america because the KKK, expansion of railroad, and the thirteenth Amendment ended slavery.…
Regional differences dividing the nation among Northerners, Southerners, and Westerners was also a problem. In the North, they focused on manufacturing and trade, the South relied on plantations and…
Do you ever wonder who killed Reconstruction? Well many believe the North killed Reconstruction for a variety of reasons, but the three main reasons are the North’s racism, fatigue, and distractions. Some positives about Reconstruction were the Freedman’s Bureau, This gave the African Americans support like food, education, jobs, and legal help. Also there was the Civil Rights Act this gave the blacks and whites the same type of rights. But there was also some negatives around this time like Sharecropping because the African Americans would be getting taken advantage of. Then there was the Black Codes making laws restricting the rights of African Americans.…
The south region remained overwhelming rural while in the North the region was transformed into an “integrated economy of commercial farms and manufacturing cities”. The spread of market relation, “the westward movement of population and the rise of vigorous political democracy all reshape the idea of freedom, and identity, evermore closely with economic opportunity, physical mobility and participation in a vibrantly democratic political system.” the market revolution and territorial expansion were “intimately connected with a third central element of American…
On the eve of the Civil War, the United States was a nation divided into four quite distinct regions: the Northeast, with a growing industrial and commercial economy and an increasing density of population; the Northwest, now known as the Midwest, a rapidly expanding region of free farmers where slavery had been forever prohibited under the Northwest Ordinance; the Upper South, with a settled plantation system and (in some areas) declining economic fortunes; and the Southwest, a booming frontier-like region with an expanding cotton economy. With two fundamentally different labor systems at their base, the economic and social changes across the nation's geographical regions based on wage labor in the North and on slavery in the South underlay distinct visions of society that had emerged by the mid-nineteenth century in the North and in the South.…
