The “perfect” country
Costa Rica is a land of beautiful beaches, untouched cloud forests, and home of none less than a 90% of the world’s biodiversity. This place very peaceful, and that’s why some people may call it “the Switzerland of Latin America” as we abolish our standing army a long time ago. We, the ticos, are also well known because of our friendly personality. Perhaps everything I said was just the same story the tourist office tell others as if it was some kind of Utopia.
Unfortunately, I’m afraid I got some bad news. Nowadays, materialism, selfishness and fear have poisoned our souls and blinded our eyes to the truth. The Costa Rican of today rebuild this place into a “second Argentina.” Apparently we gain an infamous reputation because of our overconfidence and chauvinism. That same overconfidence is what already turned us into hypocrites.
The society’s hate towards Nicaraguans is similar as the problem the Americans have with Mexicans. Here, he average person claims Nicas have darker skin color than us and that they are war like people because of our differences in the past. You can see many of them looking for a job so they can earn money in a honest way, but instead of been polite we treat them like some kind of inferior race scum.
If we are so friendly, why do we see people from other countries as “aliens?” Or even better, why do we exclude the native people from our own country and make visitors hike for hours in order to see them. This Nation needs to stop been so judgmental.
Fortunately not everything is lost. There are still persons that try their best to make Costa Rica a better place. We just need to take a chance an open our arms to others so they can see how good we Costa Ricans are. That’s the best way for a country of progress and mutual understanding.

Interspersed between the interview with Cucal is an outline of the 50’s and 60’s, which examines the Agrarian reforms and of the CIA orchestrated coup. Contrary to what many historians believe, the left wing reforms were not the reason for the CIA coup, but rather a growing and vocal Communist Party. This chapter also explores the unique role personal relationships play in Guatemalan politics and how people use the system personally, to express racism and settle old scores, an important factor in the 1978…

    Cold War in Guatemala

Guatemala is known for being one of the most dangerous countries in Central America; nevertheless, it is not its fault that it is the way it is. During the Cold War there were many factors involved and many events that led to the Guatemala of today. It all began with the election of Colonel Arbenz during the “Ten Years of Springtime” which ended because President Eisenhower was influenced by his connections to Guatemala´s “state within a state,” (TWT) the United Fruit Company. His decision disrupted a prosperous time for the country and created a dictatorship that gave birth to an army that caused a civil war which lasted over thirty years. Followed by a genocide that has the worst human rights record; it marked the beginning of a totally different Central American country that is now scarred and has not yet fully recovered from this disastrous event. Sometimes actions are committed for the right reasons but in a wrong way; the United States did exactly that. They changed an entire nation for their own interest by having most of the country under the control of an American-owned business, and ended up destroying it slowly and painfully with the result of a genocide and a thirty-year civil war. On the other hand, the Soviet Union only stood aside and let the country’s communism be taken over.…

Puerto Rico is a beautiful place. The sun is always shining and the temperature does not go below eighty degrees Fahrenheit. If you run out of something like sugar or salt, you can always knock on your neighbor’s door and they will be happy to help you out. They treat everyone as if they were family. There is always something to do. Either you can go to the beach, go to the waterfalls, take a stroll through the jungles, or even sit under a palm tree and drink out of a coconut shell. Although there are many pros, there are also many cons. The crime rate in the island of Puerto Rico is high. Many fights involve objects, not just fists. It can be a brick, a stick, or even a broom. Fights are taken very serious. Also, the economy is not in great shape. Despite all of the cons, people seem to focus on the pros. The beaches are breath taking. The water is crystal-clear blue. The people are beautiful and very exotic.…

Costa Rica and the United States of America get along quite well. Of course there has been a few bump in the road but nothing bad enough to make us hostile. We are good friends because we help each other out by buying each others products and such. Costa Rica and its relations with other countries are exquisite right now. They have been apart of the international community and have been neutral to most countries for quite some time. Of course it may be hostile to a few countries but everyone seems to have enemies. This country is said to be very beautiful so if I had the time I would gladly visit it and spend a few days on the beach. Things are cheap there and I can be cheap so it would work out great. This country is a very beautiful country that makes its money off of very natural things and I…

Even though I had enjoyed all the Hispanic traditions of my family, the current situation of my country has led me to immigrate to U.S. I am sure that all of the lessons and traditions that I explained above will always be an important part of who I am. Nevertheless, the political and economic situation of my country has led, not only me, but also millions of Venezuelans to emigrate looking for a better future. In my opinion, this is a sad situation and I hope that with a lot of effort and hope, Venezuela will once again the country my grandparents and parents once lived in.…
