I find this field fascinating, because I grew up part of my early life with my grandmother, and she was always assisting others both physically, and mentally. I experienced her mending broken marriages, and also helping others to cope with their physical disabilities. One morning a young lady came to my grandmother’s house, she was crying and look very sad. nothing had happened. Her husband came by a few minutes later. My grandmother spoke with him briefly and then he shook her hand and left with a smile. I was curious so I asked my grandmother what happened, and she said “my son in this life people are always faced with problems, that is why I make myself available to help whenever I can”. She went on to further State that all she did was to offer the couple a better solution to the problem they were having.
I can also recall a young man in the district that we lived, who was paralyzed from the waist down for a number of years due to a motor vehicle accident he was involved in.
He was always at his house mostly in bed, when my grandmother became aware of the young man’s situation, she took the initiative to contact the relevant government agency for help for him, as a result of my grandmother’s intervention the young man was presented with a wheelchair, now he was able to move around in the community and interact with others freely. He and his family lauded my grandmother for her kind intrusion. As an adult when I reflect on what my grandmother did I realize that it was possible for me to seek the appropriate knowledge necessary to purse you a career in the social work field. It is quite evident that there are processes to follow in order to prepare for work in the social work field as a Rehabilitation
Counselor.
Apart from the fact that I am compassionate, empathetic and caring. I know that I would have to support these characteristics with formal education. Therefore, acquiring my bachelor’s degree would be the first step, followed by the Master’s degree, because most organizations require a Master’s degree. However, a bachelor’s degree is the ultimate step to get into the Master’s program.
