Beneath the Clouds, Ivan Sen, Road Movie 2002, shows perceptions of personal discovery. Explores intrinsically linked ideas of discovery through the lens of cultural identity and heritage. Similar themes are also discovered in Swallow the Air (2006) exploring the course to discovery and the sometimes devastating circumstances that t the quest for an understanding of one’s cultural heritage. Both text are similar as they discuss issues of poverty within the indigenous communities along with the longing to discover themselves through discovering their past.
Lena’s identity is being shaped by a photo album that she has of her Irish father who is no longer in the picture.
She escapes the poverty stricken lifestyle, when she says “You don’t give a shit about us, do ya?” and is portrayed with a close up of Lena’s face. This is rebutted by her mother “You shut ya mouth Lena” this shows her opinion isn’t welcome in this environment.

Close up of the Christian cross shows the biblical illusion and Christian background, represents the fathers background. This is symbolic of her life, as she feels that she is beholden of her will, and she is being sacrificed – due to treatment by her mother.
She is losing touch with her Aboriginal identity because she feels like it has neglected her and she no longer wants to be a part of it.
Even though she doesn’t know much about the Irish way of life, she sees it as an escape and a better lifestyle.
Lena’s complex light skin and green eyes allows her to be seen as white. She is offered help and a drink by the barman, and this is in direct contrast to the darker skin Aboriginal characters.
