Relationship Between Romeo And Juliet

Title Romeo and Juliet is a classic romance story that has been a part of Western culture since it’s creation in the 1590’s. Some interpret the love between Romeo and Juliet as something to strive for, but they’re wrong. Romeo’s love towards Juliet is completely vain, and Juliet’s love towards Romeo is just as superficial. Romeo and Juliet could not be in love, Juliet was much too young, Romeo’s idea of love was outer beauty, and they barely knew each other. Juliet’s father introduces his daughter through his conversation with Paris where he says,” My child is yet a stranger in the world/She hath not seen the change of fourteen years.” (1.2. 8-11) Juliet is not even fourteen when the play begins. Thirteen year olds are not mentally mature enough to know or understand what true love is. As her father says, she is still new to the world. She’s just a year or two into puberty, the crucial time when a child grows from child to adult. To feel such a strong emotion similar to love towards someone she met at a ball, is just not possible.
Romeo by far is one of the worst people in the play. His idea of ‘love’ is based off one trait, she’s beautiful. Finding someone attractive is an important part of relationships, having it be the only important trait is shallow. In act one, Romeo wonders why Rosaline doesn’t love him. He tells Benvolio,”She will not stay the siege of loving terms,/Nor bide the encounter of assailing eyes,/Nor ope lap to saint-seducing gold.” (1.1. 299-231) meaning Rosaline refuses his love, his looks, and his wealth and Romeo doesn’t understand why. He doesn’t think love is a strong emotional connection, but a superficial mix of looks and
