Relationships In A Midsummer Night's Dream

The course of true love never did run smooth, especially for the characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In one of Shakespeare's most memorable plays, the narrative tells us that love, no matter how strong, will never be perfect. It displays this through the 3 main couples: Lysander and Hermia, Demetrius and Helena, and Theseus and Hippolyta. These pairs have undeniable flaws, but the end goal in a story like this is happily ever after, even through trials and tribulations. Lysander and Hermia might have a deep infatuation for each other; however, it’s led to many problems for them. Demetrius and Helena became a union at the end of the play, but it was completely forced. Yet, even though Hippolyta was won in a battle with Theseus, they have a connection that differs from the other two. Although it wasn’t love at first sight, Theseus and Hippolyta have a strong bond with a chance to last because their leader type personalities go hand in hand.
Already you see a connection: two leaders. Hippolyta and Theseus are connected in the realm of influence. Even if they ruled differently, the contrasts of their way of leadership fulfill each other. Hippolyta is a warrior queen, symbolizing strength and bruteness; Theseus reigns over Athens, a place that revolves around logic and reason. Their differences are satisfying.
