Reflection Paper #1

COU 600

Fall 2013

When enrolling into a new class, it is normal to have expectations. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I understand that the upcoming semester will provide many challenges I will have to face. I am excited to see how I will grow academically over the course of the semester. I find myself eager about learning new things and refreshing my knowledge on things I have forgotten. It has been a long time since I have studied the growth and development of humans. I have strengths to bring to this class as well as weaknesses that I plan to work on during this class. By the end of this course I expect to be able to apply what I learn in counseling and become a better writer. While this class will be more stimulating than what I have been used to I hope that with the help of my classmates and my professor I can make this class a positive learning experience. During my undergraduate career, I took many psychology classes involving the human development. In one of my undergraduate classes, Lifespan Development, we went through the lifespan of people from birth until death. I took this class online and the class involved a lot of self-teaching. Because the class was online, assignments consisted of mostly online tests. While I learned a lot, I do not feel as if I learned all that I could. I am looking forward to taking this class on a more challenging level and having a deeper understanding in human growth and development. One of my biggest weaknesses is engaging in class discussions and presentations. Although I have an extroverted personality, I am very shy when it comes presentations. It takes time for me to get comfortable speaking in front a group of people. While doing presentations and engaging in class discussions, I get very nervous. In this class, a big part of my grade comes from this. Therefore, in this class I expect to get over my fear of public speaking. I hope that

By being honest with myself about my weaknesses and working on it day by day. Public speaking has been a fear of mine since elementary school. I was chosen to do a school play and soon as I stepped foot on the stage my mind went blank. I forgot every word because of the large audience that’s watched my every move. Since then I can say my stage freight has improved because I work with the pubic everyday in retail. I also have a c…

To know Jesus Christ is the best thing that can happen in a person life. It transforms your mind, body and sprint. I have picked the following three topics to share my experiences of knowing Jesus Christ. First, what can your local church do to better communicate God’s love to your community? Second, why are personal testimonies important in sharing the gospel? Third, Did Jesus claim to be God? These are the three topics that always spark my interest when talking about our Lord savoir Jesus Christ.…

I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…

I agree with principle 7 that when you speak nothing bad can actually happen. When you receive feedback from the audience you can use it to strengthen your skills which can also be useful. I believe principle 8 is not useful. The principle says you don’t have to control the behavior of your audience. I believe that it is hard to control your anxiety when someone is talking during your speech because it makes you think about the topic your delivering and what the audience thinks about it (do they think my topic is lousy?). Principle 9 states the more you prepare, the worse you will do. I agree with this because when you drill the speech into your head it builds up unnecessary stress. I agree principle 10 that your audience truly wants you to succeed. I agree because most of the audience has been through public speaking and knows the troubles of it too. Three Strengths that I have that could help me overcome fear of public speaking are that I am understanding, optimistic, and non-judgmental. I feel that these characteristics to understand, always looking at the positive side and not judging allow me to speak without…

A big portion of my life I was a very secluded and quiet kid from middle school into freshman year of college. Being put in a class where all your assignments, quizzes, and tests were all based on your ability to speak to others sounded like a nightmare to me. Lesson after lesson I learned how to avoid plagiarism, the multiple parts of a speech, and even how to avoid speech anxiety. When it was my designated day to speak, even with all the information taught, it was the worst speech given that day due to how timid I was talking. As the days went hearing other people give their first speech helped me to understand something, that I was not alone. There were others in the class that were as bad or worse than I was at delivering speeches. After the initial speech my confidence for myself grew as I prepared for the speeches throughout the…

There comes a time or two in our lives where we struggle with certain aspects which we will overcome at a later time in life. As a child, I was told that I was very outgoing and friendly, but I felt like a shy and quiet soul. While my friends were shining stars and found merriment in groups, I was just merely a shadow behind them, finding content in being alone. However, teachers would notice this trait of mine and try to pull me out of my shell time and time again. When facing the judgemental eyes of my teacher and curious classmates, I would freeze up and an uneasiness would fill my body from head to toe. Panic would set in and my words would come out in a jumbled mess. Public speaking was just not my forte.…

This class has been an experience to which I am thankful for. I believe this class should continue to be a must for all incoming freshman here at Concordia. By taking this class I learned so many things about how to successfully adapt from high school classes to college courses. Every day in your class was a new day for me to learn about how to prepare and plan for success for not only the next four years, but also for the rest of my life. The great thing about transitions though, is that I was about to meet so many great new people in my life. With all the interacting done between people in the class, I was able to talk and have conversations with everybody…

In chapter 50 of the Speak With Courage textbook I learned to Set a goal, and then set out to achieve that goal. Going right along with this I also learned that on the day you speak, as the person you are, with the skills, knowledge, and aptitudes you possess, do the best you can and let it go. Personally, I often become overwhelmed that people will not like my speech because I am not the most talented or gifted student at strategically and efficiently expressing myself. Other times I feel like I am competing with my sister for the best speech performance. After reading these tremendous chapters in the Speak With Courage textbook I feel a renewed sense of motivation to not compare myself to others. I also find it helpful to go into each speech…

This class to make us know ourselves better, I tried to analyse what is the thing that I am good at and how can I keep it. For example, I think I am good at communicate with people so I can work with team. About my weakness, I found I am really bad at presentation. I get nervous easily that’s why every time when I did my presentation I lose confidence and eye contact with audiences. I will practice more like trying to say thing in front of people and develop my skills.…

I have never been an extremely confident person. Although I love to express my ideas with others, I face anxiety when confronted with the prospect of public speaking or even speaking in class. I tend to focus more on my schoolwork and less on making sure I am participating in every way possible. However, my junior year was a major turning point. Just taking one different and challenging class opened my eyes and showed me that I am capable of more than I thought possible.…

It was my point of view on the death penalty, so naturally it was a touchy subject to begin with. The nature of the topic made it more difficult for me to execute (no pun intended) my speech. I walked up to the podium, fixed my papers, and started reading. The class was silent. It felt like I was reading for hours, but it took me only 10 minutes. At the end of the speech, my teacher asked for opinions and critiques. One boy said he agreed with my point of view. Another girl said, "I admired how passionate you were about what you were saying." That comment built up my non-existent confidence. It made me come to terms with my problem. I then made it my personal mission to find a solution to this problem, or maybe I was still stuck in my Geometry class from first period, who knows. We did more and more presentations, sometimes alone and sometimes with a partner. My public speaking teacher was also a Drama teacher, so she wanted to incorporate a little part of her Drama class. The assignment was to read a monologue and act it out. Now, public speaking was hard enough for me, but acting in front of people was on a whole different level. I managed to complete the monologue without having a panic attack, so that was a good sign. By the time the school year was over, I had gotten more confident in my presentations. I could talk in front of a class without resembling a tomato! Mission…

I think that I challenged myself to receive good grades, and that I have done so this semester. I am eager to find out new or different things that I have some knowledge about, but I was amazed at the things I thought were right with counseling issues that I was completely wrong about. I am sure that I still have a long way to go, and many new things to learn. I feel that I was entirely invested in this class and all the assignments that were given to me. I wasn’t late on any assignments and many times had the assignment finished before it was due. I read each chapter carefully and was interested in each new thing that I found. I always want to do my very best in each class that I take. I returned back to college when I was 40 years old. This was something that I had dreamed of for many years, but was afraid to try it. I thought that I wasn’t smart enough to go back to school. I am glad that I made this decision even if it was many years after I should have done it.…
