Many of the students enrolled in our independent study charter school come from a low socioeconomic background and are academic underperformers, especially in mathematics. Most students lack the time and resources to be able to attend school multiple days a week or to spend extra time working with their teachers to improve their lagging mathematics scores. In addition, these teachers often only have a very limited amount of time to work with each individual student before they must move onto the next. These obstacles make it more difficult for these students to complete the required course load.…

Three major investigations were conducted in an effort to determine the impact of home school regulations on educational enrollments in the United States. Home school regulations were obtained from state departments of education and investigated to determine the strength of the accountability measures. Populations representative of the school-age population by state, school enrollment, school non-enrollment, and home school enrollment were collected using 2000 U. S. Census data. The relationship between the strength of the home school regulations and the home school enrollments was examined. Finally, the existence of a discrepant student population was assessed.…

Programs that have been implemented at schools across the country include standardized after-school math programs, Reading First, which provides grants to schools to help implement scientifically proven methods of instruction, and the Mathematics and Science Initiative, which helps to ensure that schools use scientifically proven methods of teaching math and science (National Education Assn). It is clear that the main goal of these programs is to improve learning rates and thereby increase test scores, which has indeed happened in many school…

However, gleaned from this research review and causing concern for educators everywhere, student test scores effect teacher and administrator evaluations (Briggs 24-29). Cumulative information on funding Common Core, the hardships of implementation, and the failure of appropriate planning is mostly missing in the research studies. For years, children of all ages have been required to take standardized tests in order to assess their capabilities and theoretically prepare them for further education. These tests are often the main factor in acceptance into colleges and universities, used in grade advancement for younger ages, and an overall indicator of a person’s ability. However, because of the lack of variety in the subjects they evaluate, standardized tests are often under scrutiny for whether or not they are actually as necessary as the school systems all across the county make them out to be.
