Remember, by Joy Harjo, the theme is to always remember where you came from and to never take anything for granted. The theme is told throughout the story by the use of figurative language, sound and imagery.
Joy uses figurative language to relay the message of the poem. One example is when she says, “Remember the suns birth at dawn.” This personification is saying not to forget how the sun rises. It also means don’t take for granted that you have another day to live and express yourself.
Always be grateful that you woke up another day and get the chance to explore. Another example is when she says, “Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their tribes, families, their histories. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems.” This personification says to remember mother nature because without it you wouldn’t be alive. Mother nature allows us to live each day to the fullest and to breathe.
In Remember, repetition and refrain have a lot to do with relaying the theme. One example of Joy using repitition and refrain is when she says, “Remember that language comes from this. Remember the dance that language is, that life is. Remember.” Joy keeps reminding us to remember.
To remember everything in your life that got you where you are today and to never forget the people and things that helped. Lastly, imagery helps to relay the theme. An example of imagery in the story is, “Remember the earth whose skin you are; red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth, brown earth, we are earth.” This appeals to the sense of sight. You can see all of the different ethnicities and don’t forget to remember all of them. Also when it says, “Remember the wind.
Remember her voice.” This appeals to the sense of touch and the sense of hearing. You can feel the wind and hear her voice. Don’t forget what the wind feels like, don’t forget how her voice sounds.
The theme of the poem, Remember, by Joy Harjo is to remember where you came from and never take anything for granted. Also to remember all of the people and things that helped you get to where you are today. This theme is revealed in the story through figurative language, sound, and imagery. "Remember" is a great poem that reminds you to always be grateful for life and the people in it.

Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Just as poetry is a permanent mark of feelings that last forever on paper, tattoos are permanent symbols that last forever on the skin. Tattoos and poetry can easily be combined such as in Kim Addonizio’s sonnet, “First Poem for You,” the speaker admires her partner’s nature themed tattoos in a darkened room. This may seem to be a simple poem, but by utilizing tattoos as symbols, including tactile and visual imagery in her poem, and using the sonnet as her structure, Addonizio laments about the true meaning of relationships and their longevity.…

The last paragraph of “His Last Game” adds a sentimental tone. The specific line that gives the audience a sense of remorse is, “What happens to what I remember? You remember it for me, okay?”. It also allows us to see that he has finally realized that his memories are what is most important to him, not only his last memories, but rather those little memories between him and his brother have shared in the past. He reminds us that the little things in life are the ones that have the greatest effect on us, these memories are going to be the ones that we remember the most.…

In the above lines pulled from the poem "One Today", I put the words in bold that I would change if I had been the author. I would change the word "write" to deliver, because anyone can write a poem, but Blanco was stating that his mothers hard work got him where he is today, and not everyone is able to deliver a speech at a presidential inauguration. In the second and third examples, I would change "hear" to observe and "tired" to weary, as I believe those are stronger word choices that will get the authors point across with more conviction. I would change the word "head" in the fourth example to trudge, because in the following lines, he gives examples of hardship and is trying to convey how exhausted the person is. Finally, I would change…

Just as the author longed for his child like memories and could not fulfill or experience those moments again in adult hood, we are not able to replace memories either.…

Art is expression through creativity that allows us to deliver a message that may be more significant than just words on a page. Art connects with people on a more emotional and spiritual level, and it is this that can help to drive home the artists message in his or her works. Natalie Czech’s “A Poem by Repetition by Allen Ginsberg” combines two powerful pieces of art, poetry and photography to create one cohesive piece of art. The art is inspired by writings documented in Ginsberg’s personal journal; not originally being a poet, Ginsberg later had his journal turned into a poem. Czech later discovered the poems and altered the ending to a broader form of self-appreciation, changing the last line of the poem from “anybody,” to “anything.”…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…

The text that I will be analyzing is a poem by Lorna Crozier called The Child Who Walks Backwards. Throughout my analysis I will look into parental abuse, underlying meanings in the lines in the poetry, as well as connections I can make personally to the book. I think it is also important that I bring forth essential messages in the words and statements of the poem. The main theme I will choose to focus on is that abuse does not only happen at school or back alleys, but that it happens in homes as well.…

In “Mnemonic” by Li-Young Lee a man is looking back on his life while falling asleep. He tries to recall the memory of his father and his blue sweater. He remembers his father wrapping him in the blue sweater when he was cold, but he never gives the sweater back. The boy fondly remembers his father and all the love his father had for him, and the first sign of regret is seen. The sweater is a symbol of love from father to son but the love was unrequited and the boy, now a man, wants nothing more than to show his father how much he loves him. The man’s loving memory quickly shifts to one of disappointment. He recalls his father’s memory and how complex it was, saying that he was “A man who forgot nothing” (l 13). He then thinks of his own memory saying “ There is no order / to my memory, a heap / of…
