Remember The Dialect Of Mark Twain

Readers of Mark Twain’s work will remember his dialect. In one of his popular stories The Adventures of Tom Sawyer he uses dialect to describe people from the southwest. In this story Mr.Twain tells a story of how a boy tricks other kids in his neighborhood to do his chores. As Tom tries to convince a boy to do stop doing his chores to do his, the kid says “Can’t, Mars Tom. Ole missis, she tole me I got to go an’ git dis water an’ not stop foolin’ roun’ wid anybody.” Mark Twain is using this dialect to show off southwestern accents and speech. This quote is an amazing way to portray a character and helps develop said character.

    He spells words differently to give an idea and somewhat make fun of southern language. It is mostly seen through the slave Jim, who never seems to properly enunciate his words.
