Remember the Titans themes
Remember the Titans is not just another football movie. It is about so much more, teamwork, friendship, pride, change, belief, integration, discrimination and especially racism. It is a true story about real life.
Remember the Titans is about football and the barriers they have to overcome to play. The teams had to combine and get a new coach. They had to overcome racism and work as a team. They went to camp where perfection was demanded of them. They united there and started working on strategies and working on their football.
Teamwork and friendship were other themes in the movie, or story as you will. When there were combined there was fighting and hatred. At camp they had to get along, they had to share rooms and work together. Coach Boone was very strict and came down hard on them about becoming friends and a team, with the other race. They became united as a team after Coach Boone took them on the run to the graveyard and told them about Gallipoli and all the death. After that they became a team.
Racism and discrimination are definitely the main themes in the movie. As the blacks move in with the community and school, there is integration and change, some people where welcoming and others were not, beliefs were challenged and there was a lot of anger. People had to overcome their pride and get along, although some chose not to. There is corruption and people are treated very badly. There was racism everywhere; they couldn’t even eat in the same places.
Leadership is a prominent theme within the movie. During the integration people like Julius and Gerry really stepped up and become leaders, the football team also did. Others in the community stepped up to lead as well but the football players were the main leaders, after they overcome racism the whole town did. The football team set a good example for the rest of the community.
Remember the Titans is not just another football movie. It covers some really serious problems and basic everyday problems.
