Remote Monitoring and Controlling System Based on ZigBee Networks
Soyoung Hwang and Donghui Yu* Department of Multimedia Engineering, Catholic University of Pusan, South Korea {soyoung, dhyu}@cup.ac.kr Abstract
Thanks to the rapid development of information technology and the growth of the Internet through high speed networks, network environments have even been changed from office oriented environments based on business industries and public institutions to the interconnection of digital electronics in home networks. Home network based applications are very diverse and the remote monitoring and control areas have been studied. Recently, ZigBee has become one of the most promising technologies for home networks. ZigBee is a specification for a suite of networking, security and application software layers using small, low-power, low data rate communication technology based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard for personal area networks. Moreover, owing to the rapid growth of mobile technology, highperformance smartphones are widespread and in increasing cases are utilized as a terminal device. In this paper, we propose the design and implementation of a remote monitoring and controlling system using ZigBee networks. This system targets a home network. Web services and a smartphone are used for the client system to monitor and control the home. Keywords: remote monitoring, ZigBee networks, remote control, smartphone, web service

To make the SDR platform reconfigurable and flexible, a software-hardware co-implementation approach is adopted in this design where hardware modules can be run- time configured by software drivers. Such feature can be used to maintain quality of service by constantly monitoring channel conditions and changing the operating parameters of the physical layer to compensate for any channel degradation. A central part of the system architecture is a Personal Computer processor. Software code developed in LabVIEW runs on this processor while time critical digital signal processing algorithms are executed by the hardware used namely Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), XBeePro and the WizFi210. By using this generic platform, any protocol can be used for transmitting and receiving the real-time data. One can select any of the digital modulation techniques i.e. FSK, PSK, QAM (4 to 256 bits), and the data is sent in secured form by the use of forward error coding technique namely the convolution coding technique and turbo coding techniques. The designed module has been tested using the NIUSRP hardware and the test jigs for Zigbee and WiFi module by transmitting and receiving data, text and image in real time. With the help of these hardware’s it has been proved that the signal transmitted has been recovered…

Now a days, everyone wants to control their appliance wirelessly (i.e. remote control). Here is a simple tested and inexpensive remote control switch utilizing reading available components. The project is designed to operate electrical loads using a TV remote. The remote transmits coded infrared data which is then received by a sensor interfaced to the control unit. The system operates electrical loads depending on the data transmitted from the TV remote. Operating conventional wall switches is difficult for elderly or physically handicapped people. This proposed system solves the problem by integrating house hold appliances to a control unit that can be operated by a TV remote.…

Compared to Bluetooth, ZigBee provides higher network flexibility and a larger number of nodes, and a better transmission range with low power consumption. Recently, ZigBee-based wireless networks were tested in various applications. In [8], the authors investigate the use of ZigBee and mobile phones in monitoring elderly patients with diabetes mellitus or heart diseases. A ZigBee WiMAX nursery system for patient monitoring was proposed in [9]. An interesting application of ZigBee-based wireless sensor nodes in the real-time monitoring of fruit logistics is discussed in [10]. The work presented here simply attempts to probe into the applicability, usefulness, and practicality of using wireless-ZigBee based network in monitoring the signs of patients on a hospital floor and surrounding area without confining them to a bed. The presented solution is meant to be both simple, cost effective and hopefully causes minimal interference with the patient’s mobility and comfort. A wearable sensor unit, attached to the patient’s body, reads and transmits the patient’s fetal…
