Renaissance: Spem In Alium By Thomas Tallis
The piece from the Renaissance period I chose to write about is Spem in alium by composer Thomas Tallis. This piece is a renaissance molet in Latin which was composed in the 1570s and while the history for this piece is unknown the piece did come up in 1597 in Nonsuch Palace in a catalogue where the piece was dubbed as "a song of fortie partes". Many believe the piece to be written for Queen Elizabeth for her 40th birthday. To create Spem in alium Tallis organized the choir in 8 different choirs each containing 4 different voice parts. Thomas Tallis is deemed as one of the most important English composers of sacred music. Born in the 16th century Tallis started his career as a boy chorister then an organist for Dover Priory and later ended

Marcus Aurelius was born on April 20, 121 AD into a family of royalty. His uncle and adoptive father, Antoninus Pius, was the emperor of Rome. Aurelius, too, was trained from birth to be a great ruler like his father. At age eleven, he dedicated himself to religion, although he considered philosophy to be the "true, inward" religion, one which did not require ceremonies necessary in others. He was appointed by Emperor Hadrian to priesthood in 129. The Emperor also supervised his education, which was with the best professors of literature and philosophy of the time. From his early twenties, he deserted his other studies for philosophy. In 161, Marcus Aurelius ascended the throne and shared his imperial power with his adopted brother Lucius…

The next selection of music that was sung was the piece “Festival Sanctus”. Originally intended for a SATB choir the piece was modified to fit the ensemble. A sacred piece written in Latin and adding to the feel the piece is also in a minor key. With a syncopated and bouncy rhythm the song lifted the spirits of all in the auditorium. The voices blended and seemed as if there was one big person singing…

The 1620 and 1630 saw the reinforcement of the recititative and aria in secular music with the development of the cantata. Rossi’s early cantata Mentre sorge dal mareserves as an excellent example of this development. The opera, being prohibitively expensive to put on all the time, found its forms set in the cantata, a sort of mini opera, consisting of solo voice and figured basso continuo. The cantata contained the forms of opera ñ the recitative and various kinds (strophic, bipartite, ottonario) of arias, but without the stage production and orchestra. These were written for all sorts of special occasions and became quite popular.…

During the period of the Baroque musical style (1600-1750), emotions ran high, literally. This was a time for expression of emotions through musical performances called operas. Operas were made popular in Italy in 1600 and employed many theatre elements such as music, acting, poetry, and costumes. Operas, in all simplicity, were dramas set to music. The Baroque was defined by sudden shifts in dynamic, homophonic musical texture, emphasis on beats, and unity of rhythms. Both performances, “Tu Se Morta” by L’Orfeo and “Dido’s Lament” by Henry Purcell, display distinctive qualities of this time period and serve as excellent examples of technique.…

Barbara Strozzi was an Italian composer and performer during the seventeenth century. Between the years 1644 and 1664 she published eight volumes of vocal music. In these publications Strozzi most frequently wrote for solo soprano and basso continuo. Six of these volumes include only secular vocal music including vocal styles such as madrigals, ariettas, arias, and cantatas for solo voice. One cantata in particular, L’amante Segreto: Voglio Morire, was part of her second collection of secular vocal works composed in 1651. Each cantata included in this collection has a title that succinctly expresses the meaning and emotion of the poem the music is set to. This specific cantata, Voglio Morire, is an example of the combined use of first and second practice counterpoint with multiple vocal styles. Evolution of musical form in the seventeenth century was inevitable, and this cantata is an example of the musical advancements being made during this time.…

The first piece to be examined is “Don Giovanni”, which was written by Mozart during the Classical era of classical music. It is apparent that it was written during this period by the use of both stringed and wind instruments. The vocals are harmonic, and go from being sung softly to very strong and intense, which also indicate that the piece was written during the Classical era. In this piece the music definitely plays just as much of a role in the storytelling, as the vocals do. The mood of both the vocals and the instruments indicate that the story is very personal and heart-felt.…

Myth-making was the world’s earliest form of literary story-telling. Specific to the ancient myths we have been discussing, a common theme has been man’s relationship with the gods, and the origins of suffering in humanity. We see this in the Hebrew Scriptures with Genesis, and in the two stories by Hesiod we have covered: “Work and Days,” and “Theogony.” During this time, many people had a pessimistic view of the world. This shows in these two works as they ponder questions such as: “are people good?”, “are we meant to be slaves to the gods?”, and “what happens when people do not do as the gods expect?” Through their answers these questions, we can formulate an idea of their views on humanity as a whole. For the most part, these views generally consist of a morbid outlook on life, consisting of working for the gods unconditionally, and accepting suffering as a part of…
