Wars begin when countries compete to be the unsurpassed leaders of the world. It all starts with a good country that has the finest resources and the top technology. This country does not have to try to be the best; it is born to be, and it lives angelically with other countries. Consequently, the immeasurable greatness of this nation is never loved by all. The weaker countries develop evil jealousy, and hatred for the dominant empire. Soon the wickedness of the county starts creeping out. Mournfully, the powerful country lacks the ability to see the hatred flowing through the veins of the weaker country. As a result of the jealously, a massacre of the superpower takes place, and the once weaker country over takes the superpower. In the same way that envy leads to the termination of a country, if affects people also. People, who do well for themselves in life, are envied by people who do not accomplish the same. This leads to obsessive jealously…

War, it can mean two countries fighting, or it can mean conflict between people, resulting in one side winning and one losing, In my two books “Reached” the third part of the matched trilogy by Ally Condie and “Bomb The Race To Build The World's First Atom Bomb” by Steve Sheinkin, they both show the same motif of war. These books show this by how they're both at war in a way and they end up having to work together with others in order to fight the war, and they also get betrayed. These are some the of the ways these books are alike.…

    Pride In The Iliad

The history of wars and battles can be dated back almost to the beginning of time and has since been a prominent motif in stories from various cultures and religions. Centuries later, descriptions of fighting styles to warriors to weapons, has greatly evolved. Despite the constant evolution of the ways fighting is portrayed, one thing has remained consistent over the years: the reason for initiating war. When a man’s pride is wounded, the idea that he will stop at nothing to restore it, can be seen throughout literature in many different cultures. Through the malicious and extravagant battles exhibited in The Iliad, the idea that vengeance is sought once an individual's pride has been harmed and can only be resolved by combat, is developed.…

Gladiators were put up against each other to fights to the death. The winning gladiator waited for a sign from the crowd on whether to kill or not to kill the other gladiator; if the gladiator put up a good fight then his life just might be spared (“Gladiators, Chariots, and the Roman Games”.) All Gladiators swore a solemn oath, “I will endure to be burned, to be bound, to be beaten, and to be killed by the sword” (McManus, “Gladiator Games”.)…

    All the King's Horses

    • 937 Words

Kurt Vonnegut is able to put a man’s face on war in his short story, “All the King’s Horse ”, and he exemplifies that in a time of war, the most forgotten effect on nations is the amount of innocent lives lost in meaningless battle due to unjust rulers fighting each other against a nation’s will. As Americans, we are oblivious to the fact that we have people fighting every day for our country. In addition, we ignore the fact that we do a lot of collateral damage and hurt innocent people unintentionally in order to get what we want. Vonnegut shows the reader in Pi Ying’s own sadistic way of demonstrating how he feels about war brings attention to the point that war, while unruly and cruel, is nothing more than a game of sacrifice and strategy, much like chess, and must be approached with both stealth and aggression.…

    Gladiator Monologue

But despite that, we were treated pretty well while we weren’t fighting, we were also paid ridiculous amounts of money and were even allowed to go out in the streets of Rome, mostly supervised though. Once I received an invitation to a very rich Roman household for a party. Deciding to attend, I travelled there alone and unaware of what they wanted from me, well, it was definitely not what I expected. Wanting to know what the main entertainment was, I asked the patron – he only said one word in response – “You,” suddenly, a man was attacking me, I had been thrown a sword, and the next moment he was dead on the ground, lying in a pool of his own blood. For the rest of that night I had a sick feeling in my stomach, not one where I had killed a fellow gladiator by the command of my owner, but because I had killed a free-man of my own accord. It was a few months later that I end up here, in the “great” Flavian Amphitheatre. My heart pounds like a drum as thousands of romans scream in delight as I slay yet another gladiator in these accursed games. I wait for my next opponent, little did I know he would be my last, we fought, and as we did this…
