REPORT ON THE FIELD TRIP TO CENTRAL VETERINARY LABORATORIES
INTRODUCTION
Central veterinary laboratory is situated in Kabete in Kiambu County in Kenya. It deals with confirmatory diagnosis of various diseases and as a referral laboratory for other regional laboratories, they include; Nakuru, Eldoret, Kericho, Karatina, Mariakani, Ukunda and Garissa Veterinary Investigation Laboratories
It was started in the year 1906 by European settlers with the aim of disease diagnosis and surveillance. It provides; * Veterinary services to the state * Eradication and control programmes for the prevention and control of diseases * Efficient laboratory diagnostic services and disease investigations * It mornitors and collects information on diseases at national level and provides advice and detailed information on disease diagnosis * It identifies diseases with zoonotic implication and collaborates with public health specialists and the food safety authority to control their occurence
Samples which include, feacal, blood, urine, milk and dead animals for postmortem are received at the reception which is part of the pathology lab, then taken to the appropriate laboratories depending on the test to be done. It’s at the reception also where farmers/clients pay for the services. Milk samples are charged at 150/= per teat if it’s from the same cow and 600/= if it’s from different cows, postmortem services are charged at 250/= and the notifiable diseases are tested for free e.g. Foot and Mouth Disease. The charges are to be reviewed very soon.
