What is Hazard and Disaster ?
Difference between Hazard & Disaster
Hazard:
A hazard is a situation which poses a level of threat to life, health, property or environment and is a state of emergency. Hazards are defined as “Phenomena that pose a threat to people, structures, or economic assets and which may cause a disaster. They could be either manmade or naturally occurring in our environment and hazards are something that has potential to lead to a disaster. .
Natural hazards are things like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods and drought - any physical event that happens naturally. They are caused by changes in the atmosphere, the earth’s upper and under surface or the sea or other body of water. They can happen quickly, called a rapid onset hazard, or build up gradually, called a slow onset hazard. We can’t stop natural hazards.
Disaster
A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources. So a disaster is the impact of a natural or human-made hazard that negatively affects society or environment and a disaster is when something tragic happens and leads to a number of victims.
(VULNERABILITY+ HAZARD ) / CAPACITY = DISASTER
Difference between Hazard and Disaster:
Hazards are something that has potential to lead to a disaster.
These hazards are termed as disasters when they cause widespread destruction of property and human lives.
The difference between a hazard and a disaster is that a hazard is a part of the natural environment, whereas a disaster occurs only when a hazard and development intersect and significant damage to the built environment results. Disasters often follow natural hazards. A disaster's severity depends on how much impact a hazard has on society and the environment.
