"The real" in reality programming is a highly flexible concept. Rather than solely relying upon the use of actual documentary or "live" footage for its credibility, reality programming often draws upon a mix of acting, news footage, interviews and re-creations in a highly simulated pretense towards the "real." Admittedly, mainstream television news is also involved in the recreation of reality, rather than simply recording actual events. And yet, "reality" is dramatized on reality programming to an extent quite unlike conventional television news, and this dramatization is often geared towards more promotional, rather than informational, ends. The truth of the matter is that reality shows are all fundamentally real at their core, but with most programming – producers know that viewership is key to securing the corporate sponsorships. High viewership leads to more corporate sponsors, more corporate sponsors means more money, more money means more profits for all involved in the production. So, since viewership is key, sometimes they extort or beef up ‘reality’ to make it more interesting, or it has to be ‘planned reality’ because of the numerous legalities and logistics surrounding taping.
Problems With Reality TV
Some of the problems with reality TV range from ethics to the actual people on the show. When reality TV first hit the big time with MTV's Real World, things were calm since no one knew what to expect. Now with the deluge of reality tv shows on television right now, it was only a matter of time before bad writing, contestant exploitation, and blatant rip-offs were to inhabit the industry,
They Just Aren't Real
Scripts are used in some reality shows. It's just a matter-of-fact now. Situations are manufactured and specific lines are given to the reality show participants so that drama can unfold. Most reality TV shows have specific themes and challenges that are meant to pit the contestants or participants together so they fight, argue, and cause mayhem.
Humiliation
Many people watch reality TV to satisfy the desire to laugh at those people who have problems. Viewers mock, criticize, ridicule, and judge those who can't get along with others, like to make fools of themselves, and do stupid things just to make a buck.
Perpetuation
One major problem with reality TV is the perpetuation of problems. The themes are enhanced when watching reality TV. Racisim, homophobia, gender hatred, etc. are all obvious with some reality TV shows and subtle in others. The fact that the producers let this happen reinforces the bad elements of people which were once hidden from public view.
Problems With Reality TV: Stock Characters
Whether you see it or not, reality TV tends to cast those characters we can all figure out within the first episode. Some of the common characters we run across on reality TV: * The sweet and innocent girl * The outspoken man or woman * The party guy or girl * The promiscuous person
Money/Power/Drama Motivation
When money or power is the ultimate goal of a reality TV show, this is a bad effect because then people can potentially get hurt. The two most common ways people get hurt are emotionally and mentally. Sadly, though, the ones who do the most hurting are usually the ones that stay on the show the longest. Producers know who to cut and when. They do follow trends and they do listen to the audience of the show. It is all about ratings for the producers and money or power or even fame for the contestants. The great thing about reality shows is that they usually cost a lot less to produce than a scripted series – this also means more money for the producers. So, whether you like reality shows or not – they are not going away anytime soon
Being Outrageous/Fame
One problem with reality TV that has occurred within the past few years is monotony. There's rarely a fresh idea lately which causes some of the participants to figure out the most outrageous thing they can do to get the audience's attention. They want fame and will do whatever it takes to get it. Because with fame, as everybody knows, comes money, right? At least, that's the thinking some reality TV stars have.
Most of the non-reality feeling footage, is what the industry calls “creative editing”, where they take things that people say and do out of context and imply something to be real to the viewer, but in reality it is just embellishment and a trick of the trade. At the end of the day, what we view is mindless and entertaining TV is really just a business – one that looks to consumers like us to buy what the producers are selling. As with anything, use your better judgment when watching reality shows and if you don’t find a show to be particularly entertaining, healthy, or ‘real’ – then change the channel, there are plenty of options out there!

Why TRP of reality shows so high?
The past few months have seen a flurry of activity on the TV front, as the telly churned out one controversy after another. The TV audience have been treated to moments of adrenaline rush while they watched celebs live among reptiles and dangerous beings in the jungle. They waited with bated breath to see which lucky guy will be the one to win Rakhi's heart in her swayamvar. But all in all, the one thing that became clear was that television could go to any lengths to garner the much needed TRP.
While the case of Wallace Souza has shocked the world, closer home the Indian audience are not novices to TRP garnering strategies. ishQBector, a contestant in the reality show Iss Jungle Se MujheBachcao feels that the Mika and Jay episode, though eyebrow-raising, is definitely not scripted. "Mika is a crazy dude, I guess it's in his nature to be a thorn, but he is damn entertaining. Apart from the Jay episode there was also the time when he tried getting fresh with Negar. That was priceless," laughs Bector.
But unlike Iss Jungle... the show SachKaSaamna found opposition from every corner, from the first episode itself, thanks to Kambli's outburst. The show transformed the telly into a 21 inch confessional, and people tuned in to watch 'real' drama unfold.
Contestant Bobby Darling who was a celebrity contestant on the show says she chose to sit on the hot seat to divulge details of her "misunderstood life." "There's nothing scripted on the show. A contestant is aware that details of his/her life will be made public. But such is the format. The show reunited me with my Dad," says Bobby.
But television alone cannot be blamed for stooping to new lows for the much needed TRP. "We have to remember that the society in general has turned into a voyeuristic one," says actor Eijaz Khan. "Today people love to see others in pain. How else can you explain such high TRP for such shows?" asks Khan. But he warns that the day might not far when a "Souza like episode could happen in India."
As contestants of shows like Splitsvilla and Roadies have confirmed in the past that they can do anything to be in the limelight, channels seem to have no qualms exploiting the situation. Be it ShwetaTiwari and Negar Khan's bold bathing scenes in Iss Jungle... or people confessing to extramarital affairs and murderous thoughts on TV, looks like anything is okay to grab eyeballs. That's the reality of TV.
Big Boss season 3 host Amitabh Bachchan proves better host than Shilpa Shetty for Big Boss season 3 as Amitabh Bachchan has successfully made KBC show most popular shows in India. This was important factor in good TRP of Big Boss season 3. Also Amitabh Bachchan is able to connect with audience as well as inmates on Bigg Boss 3. Also Amitabh is able to share personal experiences of Big Boss contestants. Like PoonamDhillon, one of the contestants of Big Boss season 3 shot her first scene of bollywood career with Amitabh Bachan. These factors made Big Boss season 3 TRP better than TRP of previous opening shows of Big Boss shows. Big Boss season 2 hosts however Shilpa Shetty neither had experience of hosting TV reality show, nor was she able to connect with audience or Big Boss 3 inmates. Only factor that added to Shilpa Shetty was that she herself was winner of Big Boss first show.
TRP rating of popular TV reality shows in India on opening day show.
Raakhi Ka Swayamvar (starring Rakhi Sawant) on NDTV Imagine (TRP of 3.7), Aap Ki Kachehri anchored by ex-policewoman Kiran Bedi for the second season (TRP of 3.4) Khatron Ke Khiladi-2 reality show anchored by Akshay Kumar on Colors, was at 3. Paanchvi Pass reality show anchored by Shah Rukh Khan-hosted on STAR Plus last year (TRP of 4) KBC-3 anchored by Shah Rukh Khan-hosted on STAR Plus (TRP of 5.8). |
Impact of Reality TV on real life worries parents
Reality shows are dangerous for the nation as by imitating the attitude in the shows, teens are spoiling their lives. Recently a nine-year-old boy hanged himself to death while trying to imitate a stunt he saw on a popular reality show MTV Roadies..
THE DAYS for physical games are gone. Today’s youth are not interested in physical games. Their interests lie either in computers or television. Nowadays, television programmes are replete with reality shows because youth like these most. Unfortunately, in trying to imitate life in reality shows, youth sometimes lose their lives.
Reality shows are dangerous for the nation as by imitating the attitude in the shows, teens are spoiling their lives. Recently a nine-year-old boy hanged himself to death while trying to imitate a stunt he saw on a popular reality show MTV Roadies.
The incident brings into focus a teen issue never before encountered by parents. As we know, besides reality shows, other things like drugs, rock music, teen sex, alcohol and cigarette smoking are also creating problems for parents.
However, in the present circumstances, it is reality television from which they have to protect their kids because its impact is greater than the other problems.
These days, shows like Roadies 6.0, Fear Factor and KhatronKeKhiladi have become the chosen entertainment diet for teens. In fact, the action has started spilling over to real life.
Easily influenced teenagers, who can’t seem to get enough of adrenaline-pumping reality shows peppered with daredevil stunts, are busy tightrope-walking, jumping off ledges and pulling off crazy bike stunts on city streets.
According to the youth, the best thing about reality action shows is their unpredictability. Every season, they raise the bar and the tasks get tougher. It is this dangerous effect that reality TV has on kids that is sending parents into the panic mode.
In this connection, some parents say, ever since children started watching the show, they have been attempting crazy stunts. Sometimes, those imitating stunts in reality shows are caught. After they are caught, their parents see a great need in not allowing them to watch the show because stunts, abusive language and violent behavior are more or less its theme.
Parents feel helpless as their kids are convinced that these senseless tasks and the violent attitude that accompanies them is ‘cool.’ In this regard, Dr K. K. Kashyap opines, “I caught glimpses of the show when my son was watching it and I was appalled. A contestant was being humiliated mercilessly and he (his son) seemed to be enjoying the whole ordeal she was being put through. When I blurted out my thoughts aloud, he said, ‘She deserves it.’ So it’s not just the stunts that they want to emulate, but also the whole Roadies attitude.”
A ban on such shows or at least a regulatory body that monitors TV content is what parents think will be like utopia. But what’s needed now is a more practical, immediate solution. There’s no use taking a moralistic stand on the whole issue as much as you may be tempted to.
You cannot reason with a teenager unless you step into his shoes and look at life from his point of view. Sit with your teen, watch the show and discuss it. Let him tell you why it’s cool. Hear him out. And then you tell him why it’s uncool.
This way you can meet him midway. Hopefully you’ll know what’s running in his head and he’ll understand why you are worried.
It is also the responsibility of producers and owners of different channels to think twice before making such programmes so that teens don’t go in the wrong direction.
Literature review
Review1(2006)The paper discusses whether television really does enhance children's learning experience and whether this learning experience also enhances their education. The paper also looks at the possibility that the media's exposure influences obesity and health risk behaviors, violence, emotional and cognitive developments as well as alter children's' perception of reality. The paper contends that although research has indicated that television can educate children, the amount of exposure and content can bring more harm than good to children.
Review2(2006)This paper examines how reality TV has become the new genre of television programming arresting the attention of the American viewer. In particular, it examines the breakthrough of this phenomenon into our popular culture and how, at the heart of this sociological issue, is our view of ourselves outside of the medias influence. It attempts to show how the realitytelevision shows have access to our cultural psyche. It looks at how, when we are unhappy with ourselves, its sells us an image of what life should be and then proceeds to sell products and services that reinforce the image they sell.
Review3(2004) This paper briefly considers the history of realitytelevision and its recent popularity explosion, reflecting on possible reasons for this surge of interest. The paper also looks at both positive and negative factors of different formats of realitytelevision programs and their possible implications for society. An attempt is then made to define how this phenomenon relates to modern cultural identity.
Review4(2003)This paper explores the role of actors and popular personalities on shaping society, especially when seen on reality TV shows. The author explains the appeal of reality TV and further describes the methodology used in this study. Additionally, the psychological factors of being a viewer of reality TV are discussed. Some of the pitfalls of this research project from a sociological standpoint are presented and analyzed. The paper contains a long discussion on qualitative research and how this approach is applied to this study of reality TV. The paper also contains a chart that categorizes reality TV characters.
Review5(2003) This paper provides a response to position that reality TV creates a "false sense of community through vicarious experience instead of a real sense of community through shared experience". It analyzes the various social roles and how they are influenced by reality TV in terms of how the notion of "reality" is conceptualized and how these roles contribute to this conceptualization. A summary of the research is provided in the conclusion.
Review 6 (2002) Thepaper investigates the factors responsible for this medium's great popularity. It looks at its appeal to the democratizing influence, to people's desire for status, to natural curiosity, and to competitiveness. It also looks at other factors influencing the attraction to reality television, such as the desire to socialize and the allure of this medium for the less intellectual audience. The paper concludes with a brief synopsis of its main points.
Review7(2001) The author points out that reality television has given networks another option to violence, but the audience is gradually becoming desensitized to the ethical ugliness, just as they have become desensitized to violence. The paper concludes that more and younger people associate behavior such as lying and cheating, not with a moral quandary, but with a vicarious thrill.
Review 8 (2000) In this article, the writer discusses the trend of reality programs that appeared on television in the late 1980s and has continued to the present. The writer declares that although reality television has become a dominant part of TV viewing, it is important to realize that along with any "entertainment" there comes responsibility. One needs to be concerned when the lines between reality and fantasy become so blurred that one can no longer recognize the difference. The writer concludes that as long as one recognizes that reality television is solely for entertainment purposes, then all is well.
Review 9 (2000) The paper argues that, regardless of whether we approve or disapprove of reality shows, this entertainment type can have a positive influence on society. It argues that, due to the fact that they educate viewers about themselves and about human behavior, they provide psychologists with the resources for the study of human behavior.
Review 10 (1996) This paper uses realitytelevision as an example of race, class, gender and sexual orientation in popular culture. The author argues that realitytelevision shows are filled with stereotypes. The paper relates that these stereotypes are used to maintain the status quo.
Need of research
The reality of the reality shows has been questioned by many from its beginning. These new age entertainment recipes are often called as a mélange of reality and fiction. Many believe that they are simply scripted and exaggerated just for the entertainment value. So far, research on reality TV has indicated some possible reasons for viewing, although research results seem to indicate that viewers tend to watch more out of habit rather than for specific needs. Moreover, certain attitudes related to self-perception or sense of self-value appears to interact with the appeal and uses of reality television, as do levels of involvement with the program. Therefore, this study builds on previous research to further explore reality TV motives, additional attitudes related to self-perception and aspects of involvement with reality TV. The particular model proposed within this study combines reality TV motives, with certain social and psychological antecedents, and investigates how these concepts influence involvement with reality TV. Specifically, under involvement, exposure to reality TV, affinity with and perceived realism of reality TV content are examined; therefore, focus is on the following three research questions:
RQ1: What are salient motives for watching reality television?
RQ2: How do motives, social and psychological antecedents and attitudes toward reality TV (perceived realism, affinity) relate to each other? and some other objectives which are mentioned below.

Reality TV like any other scripted shows needs a storyline to capture the audience and keep them hooked on that’s where the drama comes in as we see in so many reality shows. The key difference between reality shows and scripted shows is they are not played by actors or as Rupel says “wannabe actors.” Reality shows needs hundreds of hours of footage just to make a single hour of TV show requiring longer shooting schedules as compared to scripted shows that can finish filming in a few days as they cannot predict when something interesting will happen. As J.Ryan Stradal suggests that unscripted storytelling is working backwards from the ending and working with what you have and crafting it into emotional or humorous journey that will capture the…

The Faux Authenticity of Reality TV Saturday night, you have nothing to do so you turn on the TV, and the first show it displays is Man V.S. Wild. You wonder whether or not this show is true in its content, because the host could be getting some support behind the scenes. Reality TV is not truly authentic because the word “reality” has been trivialized, the content in the shows are often times distorted, and the advertisement for the shows portray only insignificant scenes. “Reality” in reality TV has morphed into the idea of entertainment rather than its definition being truth. The intention of these programs was, at first, to portray genuine occurrences in the lives of everyday people. Over time, TV stations and producers have twisted it, turning these situations into exaggerated truths. For example, in the show Operation Repo, two hosts are out to tow a construction vehicle because of the owners lack of payment. Almost immediately a verbal fight breaks out, then a physical fight, leading to the owner operating his vehicle, intentionally damaging the hosts’ truck, causing another physical fight. In reality, people argue for their car, but would not use physical violence or damaging property as a solution. Operation Repo is meant to show real life repossessions, but these situations the hosts are experiencing, are more of a sensationalized version of reality. Producers add more drama and fighting to make the show interesting to the viewers. Reality TV suggests you are seeing everything going on behind the camera, but you may not be seeing all of it. On Dirty Jobs, host Mike Rowe experiences different and usually filthy jobs, explaining how they are accomplished. One episode shows him inspecting a sewer, but throughout the program, the professionals are doing the job while he sits back and makes comments on it. Scenes of him making…
