Title
Introduction: *Attention grabber* While Americans see many more freedoms than other countries, unfair limitations and forms of discrimination still exist.
*Thesis* Same-sex marriage should be legalized in all 50 states.
Defining:
Someone who is “gay” is defined in the dictionary as a male who romanticizes other males. To be “lesbian” is the same idea, but transpired to females
Current problems:
Same sex marriage is legal in 37 states. 13 states are still banned
*Quote* “In Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas, Marriage equality is banned by Constitutional Amendment and State Law. In Nebraska it is banned by constitutional amendment alone.” (Gay Marriage ProCon.org) Article 16 of “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights” states: “Men and women of full age, without any limitation…have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.” (un.org) *HUMAN RIGHT*
Cases:
“Same-sex couples are asking the justices to strike down California 's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in the state just six months after a court ruled that preventing gays and lesbians from marrying was unconstitutional.”
In 1996 the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), was enacted. It prevents the government from recognizing same-sex couples as married in the eyes of the law, even if their marriage is legal and recognized in the state they live in.
“A New York City widow is urging the court to strike down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which limits federal benefits for same-sex couples. Edith Windsor had to pay a $363,000 federal tax bill on her late wife 's estate that would not have been levied on an opposite-sex spouse.”
*Finally Repealed*
Fixing it:
The end-goal is legalize same sex marriage in all states.
The particulars shouldn’t matter!
