Research Paper On Benito Cerreno

Along with his number of novels, Melville also authored several short stories with varied success. One of Melville's better known short stories is Benito Cereno. This work was similar to that of his earlier novel Pierre in that it held vast potential that was just misguided. Benito Cereno’s formidable power was lost amongst a sluggish and stiff storyline. The tediously built-up atmosphere made the book fairly torpid (Arwin). While the short story held little moral meaning, it still demonstrated Melville's power as a short story writer. Melville's stylistic distinction pursues through cross-motives, thrill and intrigue. Melville's style in Benito Cereno also dominated his later short story The Encantadas which further showed his distinguished style as an author(Mumford).
