I launched the latex rubber balloon just as a metallic black Chevy Avalanche was driving past us. The balloon hit the back seat passenger door. I was terrified. The balloon did not pop. Instead it made a large thud as it hit the side of truck. The truck came to an abrupt stop and the back-up lights came on. That is when I turned and sprinted toward the house, my friend following closely behind. We locked the doors and hurried to the front room so we could watch from behind the white shutters, scared but curious. “You aren’t sorry that you did it are you? You’re only sorry you got caught”. True. I don’t know why but since then that statement always resonated with me, especially through my high school escapades and adventures. Every time I was about to do something dumb (or possibly illegal) this deep loud voice would emerge in my head and I would rethink my action. Would I be sorry if I did this? Am I disrespecting someone or my family? Of course, that doesn’t mean it always stopped me from making poor choices, but it probably stopped me from making more poor choices than I otherwise would have done with the giant man acting as my conscience. That nameless man taught me about how you learn from your actions and consequences. Sure you can read about things in a book but it is the experiences that teach us the most about life.
