Research Paper On Desalination
Desalinization (also called “desalination” and “desalting”) is the procedure of removing dissolved salts from water. This produces fresh water from salt water. Desalting technologies can be used in many different ways. The most frequent use is to produce potable water from saline water for domestic or municipal purposes, but use of desalination and desalination technologies for industrial applications is growing, especially in the oil & gas industry. Of the world’s water, 97.5 percent is salt water from its oceans. Only 2.5 percent is fresh water. Of that 2.5 percent, approximately 69 percent is frozen in glaciers and ice caps, leaving less than 30 percent in fresh groundwater (swamps account for another 1

Annually, Long Beach's port ships more than $180 million in trade, which means that this city is one of the wealthiest in the state of California.(Port of Long Beach). Therefore, even though desalinization is an expensive and energy consuming process, Long Beach's economic standing makes it one of the few cities in California that is actually capable of constructing a desalinization facility. Along with its wealthier economy, Long Beach its located on the Pacific coast of California, which also makes it an ideal location for a desalinization facility because this allows for direct access to the ocean and the salinated water supply that the facility requires. In October 2005, the Long Beach Seawater and Desalination Research and Development Facility was officially commissioned. It operated for four years as a research facility for a new technique for desalinization (Bradley). Half of the funding of the estimated $20 million project was from the federal government, and the other half came from state and local sources (Bradley). It was constructed on less than an acre at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Haynes Power Plant in East Long Beach and at the time it was considered to be the largest of its kind in the…

With these solutions, water can be conserved efficiently because for the first method, it’s easy enough to do as an individual. Also for the second method which were about “shade balls”, it will make a great difference in saving water because if it didn’t exist, then the droughts would’ve gotten worse making it harder to live in those conditions. And finally for desalination, it is a great method for giving access to clean water. These methods have shown that if used, then the water that is left in our world may actually be saved if we took it to our…

Southern California imports about 85% of its water, most of it coming from the Colorado River. Because we import so much water, we are becoming too dependant on outside water sources, which needs to change if we ever want the drought to end. California has started pumping more groundwater in response to this threat, but over-pumping groundwater is not the solution either. In order to eliminate the importing of water, we need to turn to desalination, recycled water, and rainwater harvesting.…

Athletes across the country are introduced to the importance of staying hydrated. It is held as one of the, if not the most important aspect of taking care of the body. Coaches alike tell their athletes to drink lots of water but this can be a misguiding statement. Question yourself and try to remember a time when you drank so much water you started to cramp and you were left wondering how could this be. This is most likely the result of overhydration. In this paper I will discuss what over hydration is, the symptoms and effects of it and treatment options.…

Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy.…

Water is scarce in the southwestern United States and water is essential for human survival. The Colorado River is the primary reason why the southwest can sustain the massive population in the region. Without this “lifeline” of freshwater, we must find another means of supplying water to millions. Desalinizing the water from the Pacific Ocean is not yet cost effective enough to handle the demand although about 8% to 10% of the water supplied to Southern California comes from desalinization plants.…
