People can contract the disease through sexual contact with an infected person where they receive infected liquids from either mucous membranes or from the lesions. This disease is so dangerous because it is rare to get noticeable symptoms. Genital herpes will sometimes show symptoms in which small blisters will form around the infected area called lesions. Left untreated, these lesions can rupture and infected people will have to
suffer through the burning pain of ulcers. Women that are pregnant and have the disease need to contact the doctor immediately because the herpes virus can cause the baby to get a neonatal herpes infection which is very fatal.
Doctors will swab the lesions or areas of sexual contact and then it goes under testing to see if it tests positive for genital herpes. Most of the time, doctors will also take blood samples when it comes to testing for a herpes virus. Genital herpes has also been known to not show up on tests early on in its stages. Unfortunately, herpes is not curable but they do offer antiviral drugs that will suppress the symptoms but not completely get rid of them.
Like any other disease, the surest way to be safe from getting genital herpes is to not have sex. Another common preventer is to use latex condoms while engaging in sexual activities. When it comes to herpes, however, condoms do next to nothing because herpes can travel from one body to the other with the slightest contact.
