The USMC came into existence on November 10, 1775 when the Continental Congress approved the appropriation of two infantry battalions designed to perform both land and maritime defense. Marines would perform tasks including “ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security and discipline enforcement, and assist in landing forces” (Moore, n.d., para. 5). Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, served as a recruiting station and Captain Samuel Nicholas, who was the first commissioned Commander of the Marine Corps, used the tavern to recruit approximately five companies consisting of 300 men per unit. Many consider Tun Tavern to be the birthplace of today’s Marine Corps. At the time of its inception, the Marine Corps was originally planned to…

In 1812, The Hudson’s Bay Company successfully merged with its rival the North West Company, taking over the name of the Hudson’s Bay Company but the North West Company gaining ownership of 55 shares, it resulted to the most powerful fur trading entity in the world, spanning the continent - all the way to the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington and British Columbia) and the North (Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). The Hudson’s Bay Company gained the North West Company's most valuable resource, its traders and voyageurs (Who were mostly Natives and Métis) as well as rich new areas beyond the Rockies and in the far north. Now all the furs gathered throughout the interior of North America could be shipped to England through the HBC controlled route of the Hudson Strait. The Company had effectively regained its monopoly over all the lands mentioned in the Royal Charter of 1670.…
The Minnesota fur trade was one of the original economic exchanges in the United States with roots as far back as the 1500’s. What would become an influential enterprise that would drive a new wave of settlers and the beginnings of an economic infrastructure in Minnesota, started with very primitive beginnings and included a wide breadth of participants. Thus, this revolutionary enterprise that was mostly over by the 1840’s was paramount to Minnesota’s statehood.…
The USDA statics sheet shows that in 2010 the United States consumed 26.4 billion pounds of beef (“U.S. Beef”). This consumption enhanced the retail value of the beef industry to seventy-four billion dollars. Now the billions of people who made up these statics have no clue what Certified Angus Beef (CAB) or Laura’s Lean Beef are or even mean. Furthermore terminology used on menus, such as CAB, Laura’s Lean, prime, choice, yield grade, marbling, may cause many people to feel overwhelmed. However, particular items which have gained more recognition at the checkout lines and on menus are niche beef products. Two of the most common niche beef products are Certified Angus Beef and Laura’s Lean Beef. Understanding the quality standards associated with Certified Angus Beef and Laura’s Lean Beef should allow people as valuable consumers to make smarter decisions associated with meat sciences. Certified Angus Beef, also known as CAB, has a history and all three parts of qualifications needed to be granted CAB certification, marbling and maturity, uniform and consistent size, and quality appearance and tenderness. Laura’s Lean Beef, has its own history, regulations and health benefits. Laura’s Lean Beef and Certified Angus Beef are specialized niche products that are available to all consumers and have specific quality standards that are necessary for its consistent product since 1985 and 1978, respectively. As overwhelming variations of certain types of meats are sold, the consumers may be unsure which type is best suit for them when in fact there actually is the higher quality meat offered and that is Certified Angus Beef.…
The Red Cedar River is home to many interesting and unique species of organisms, including crayfish. Crayfish play a significant role in the ecosystem by serving as a food source to different organisms. By studying the factors that influence the amount of crayfish in a freshwater environment, researchers can discover more about how ecosystems persist. The overpopulation of crayfish in freshwater systems can lead to various negative impacts, such as the feeding on plants that are major food sources for different aquatic organisms and the eating of fish eggs leading to the decrease in population sizes. If there is evidence proving a positive correlation between phosphorus concentration, a chemical element that can enter water through waste or…
It’s Friday night and after a grueling week at work, a gentleman decides to treat his girlfriend to a relaxing dinner at a nice seafood restaurant. They decide to splurge and order a very expensive lobster dish. The bill arrives and it is pricey. However, they think it’s worth it because they believe they have just eaten fresh quality “lobster”. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the lobster is a cheap substitute. “It emerged that in thirty five percent of lobster dishes, there are cheaper substitute seafood instead.”(Inside Edition). Suddenly, people aren’t quite as excited about the expensive lobster dish they just purchased. Muckraking still exists in 2016 as evidenced in Inside Edition’s…
Silverfish are a common pest in homes. They are attracted to damp, dark spaces and eat cellulose. This includes books, papers, cloth and wallpaper. Although they don't bite or carry germs and diseases like other insect pests, they can do extensive damage to your possessions. Silverfish are hard to eradicate. Even exterminators are challenged in getting rid of these nuisances and keeping them gone.…
Also known as "beautiful swimmer," the blue crab is one of the more resilient of Chesapeake species, but its fate depends on many factors. With the drastic decline of the Bay's oysters, watermen began extending their crabbing efforts much later into the fall, the time they would normally have shifted to oystering. A decade later, the blue crab population has been cut in half! Many locals have made a career out of harvesting its seafood, and the annual harvest and many of its other attractions bring tourists and, in turn, revenue for the area. Blue crabs play a giant role in supporting the ecosystem and the community, and we need a way to help. Two solutions towards saving the native blue crabs would be to limit the amount of blue crabs harvested…
Bass fishing is the activity of angling for the North American gamefish known colloquially as the black bass.[1] There are numerous black bass species considered as gamefish in North America, including largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui), spotted bass or Kentucky bass (Micropterus punctulatus), and Guadalupe bass (order Perciformes).[2]…
The central figure that charted the course of the Abstract Expressionist movement was the deeply troubled painter Jackson Pollock. He was born Paul Jackson Pollock in Cody, Wyoming on January 28, 1912. He was the fifth and youngest son and grew up in Arizona and California after his family left him when he was a little over one year old. Pollock's artistic journey began at the Manual Arts School in Los Angeles, California where he joined two of his brothers. From there, he went on to New York to attend the Art Students League after being convinced by one of his brothers whom also attended the school. In 1945 Jackson Pollock married fellow artist Lee Krasner. Unfortanetly Pollock was an alcoholic, which ultimately led to his downfall. In Paris,…
The Chinook Native Americans gathered food and made their weapons all while utilizing every part of the animal or material at hand. Likewise, the Chinook showed a respect to the land that is rarely shown today. Incredibly, these people thrived with only stone tools and natural materials fashioned to fit their needs.…
In the Pacific Northwest, salmon are an incredibly important part of the ecosystem. Their presence indicates the health of rivers and there are over 100 species that depend on salmon as a source of food (Rahr). As salmon move from saltwater systems into freshwater systems again, they bring essential nutrients with them. These nutrients are put back into the ecosystem when the salmon are consumed and when their bodies start to decompose. Many of these nutrients even make their way back into the forest when bears drag the bodies of their prey away from the river (Rahr). The cycling of nutrients is essential when it comes to the health of forests and rivers. Besides improving the overall health of the ecosystems that they are a part of, salmon…
While backpacking through a foreign country, I decided to carry a box of smoked salmon, a violin, and a smart phone with me, to help engage with the local population and teach them more about where I come from.…
“Take This Fish and Look at it*” by Samuel H. Scudder is the most compelling essay for this week’s reading assignment because the author wrote in an organized, laughable tone; therefore, allowing its audience to perceive the lesson as the professor intended it to be learned. Likewise, Scudder used three different apparent modes in his essay, these include: comparison / contrast, narrative, and description. I particularly liked this essay because it relates to the great significance that in every scenario, even writing, that things can be overlooked and need to be re-examined to find better, more sufficient details. Scudder also uses humor throughout his narrative, which compared to some essays, is quite enjoyable. Overall, every individual…
