The Getty museum. J Paul Getty was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 15, 1892 and died in England 1976 (age 84). In 1945 J Paul Getty purchased a home in Malibu. During his years of living there he collected historical paintings, statues, and furniture. Nine years later he then decided to open his home to the public to share the art collections, Greek and Roman antiques, 18th century furniture, and European paintings. After some visits he then decided in 1968 to began work on his plans to build a Roman Style villa to serve as a museum for the public, because of how fascinated he was with the ancient world of the Mediterranean. The mission that J Paul Getty had try to set was “To inspire curiosity about the pieces in the museum and enjoyment and understanding of the visual art by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of outstanding quality and his historical importance.” (Getty/edu) …show more content…
The Getty museum has a collection which includes variety of sculptures, paintings, antiques, drawings, clocks, vases and etc.
One of the items in the collection is a flute glass. The artist is unknown, and was created in German in the early 16th, early 17th century. The culture of the flute glass is Netherlands or Germany. The glass flute is free-blown colorless glass and is decorated with a grape pattern and engraved with birds, dragonflies, and peacocks. Another item in the collection is a porcelain case with a gold mount. The artist is unknown as well, and the culture of the vase is Chinese and French. The date that the porcelain was created was in 1740 and the gold mounts

created in about 1750-1755. The last item I chose to write about that was in the collection was a wall clock. The artist was André-Charles Boulle, the culture of the wall clock is French. The date the wall clock was created was in 1710. On the wall clock there once were strings that hung from it and when they were pulled they would activate a chime that would alert the owner to heart the time in the middle of the night.
The Getty Villa has an astonishing appearance. It's such a beautiful place where you can learn so much. The Getty Villa has many statues and had a maze like garden because of how neat the grass is cut and shaped. The Herb Garden is a mosaic of fruit trees and perennials used by the Romans for cooking, ceremonies and medicine. The Museums Outer area is covered with a hedge-lined pathways and circular stone benches. Plants liked by the Romans, such as myrtle, ivy, and boxwood are planted around the reflecting pool/fountain. Replicas of the statues that were found are placed in their spots they were found in.
My first impression of the Getty Villa was of how peaceful and big the place was. As I did not go on the field trip with my class, I have been with my family before. I love Roman and Greek art, this was the perfect place for me to go. The exhibits are mainly statues, jewelry and pottery. There is no admission fee so that was pretty great. During my visit there I realized that the reflecting pool/fountain doesn't run water anymore because of the drought but it's still fascinating to look at.
