her own life experiences, she has demonstrated her feminist views in stories that she composed.
There are three aspects of the author’s life that are reflected in her work which are her background, her relatives, and her writing. First and foremost, Kate Chopin's literary works mention her background including her family and her environment. According to the article “ Kate Chopin” by Jones, Michelle L, Kate Chopin is an American novelist; she was born on February 8, 1851 to a wealthy family in St. Luis, Missouri. Her father, Thomas O'Flaherty is a successful businessman who emigrated from Ireland. Kate Chopin's family is a factor that influences her to compose more stories. Her father died by train accident when she was five years old. For this reason, Kate Chopin lived with her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. (2000, p1-3). Therefore, Kate Chopin lived in households headed by women. Surely Chopin was influenced by these women to have this strong personality. In specific, her grandmother, Mme Vitoria Verdo Charleville, who was a gifted storyteller, has contributed to molding Kate Chopin became a professional writer. For example, her great-grandmother encouraged Kate
Chopin by teaching her how to play piano, and by teaching her to explore unique ideas. In addition, her environment also affected her life. When she was five years old, her father registered her in Catholic school. Catholic school, where she was studying, taught her to think independently, live responsibly with family, and obey men. Moreover, after two years since she graduated from the academy, she met her husband and married him on June 9, 1870. Kate married Oscar Chopin, and gave birth to five boys and a girl. Further to this, on 1882, her husband died of malaria and her husband had left her with his debt. After Oscar died, Kate Chopin moved back to St. Louis to live with her mother. Kate Chopin grew up under the education of women who were widowed, so Kate Chopin's personality seems to be strong and independent. This suggests that Kate Chopin grew up in a patriarchal family in the nineteenth century. In addition, before she became a young woman, she had endured the death of her brother and her great-grandmother. The early death of her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather have a huge impact her childhood. Then, unfortunately, she has endured the death of his mother and her husband. According to the article “Emotions in the Story of an Hour” by Jamil, S. Selina, she suggests that Chopin has a powerful than other women when she know her husband died. In other words, women who have husband died or divorced, they often feel weak and suffer. By the strong that Chopin learned from her mother, she felt like live alone that bring her freedom. (2009, p215-220, 6p). Moreover, the story that Chopin writes is “ The Story Of An Hour” represented the life of Chopin’s mother, Eliza O’Flaherty. Eliza O’Flaherty marriage was an arranged marriage, so when she was young, she must submissive her husband and there was no freedom in the family. Through the life and death of Chopin parents, she seems to have many experiences from her family. Therefore, her relatives has helped readers better understand about Kate Chopin’s life. Finally, Kate Chopin's literary works mention her writing. Her writings clearly shown for the rights of women and simultaneously talk about the difficulties that women must follow in society at that time. Through her writings, she is likely a person who represents the women that they feel trapped in a marriage and in society. Her writing portrays her views on women's right, as can be seen in “ The Story Of An Hour”. This story talks about the liberation of women to escape the bonds of marriage and society. According to the article “Literary Contexts in Short Stories: Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" by Evans, Robert C, he wrote that women must be obedient and submissive husband; or in other words, man always has the power in the family and in society than women. (2006, p1-1, 1p). In addition, she has used many literary elements to impart her message about the oppression of women. For example, “The Story Of An Hour”. Kate Chopin describes Mrs Mallard that she is a young woman who possesses a calm face, but inside she has a hidden strength. Her character is described in detail so that the reader can understand life depression of characters in the story and also as the life of the author. Besides that, she also used some visual elements to assist readers that they can feel the change in the mood of the characters of the story. Moreover, her writing makes readers easy to understand about the content the story as well as each character's personality because she used her own experiences to composing these stories to come alive. Futhermore, readers can better understand the inequity of women that women are not treated equally like men. Therefore, although the society is very difficult to change perceptions about the importance of women at this time, Kate Chopin is likely a pioneer woman dare to speak of women's rights. In conclusion, women play an important role in the family and in society. Nowadays, women can do anything that men can do, so women need to be appreciated in society and in the family. Freedom of personal mastery is fundamental to women's rights, but in the late nineteenth century requires this right is beyond the scope of social.
