Kawasaki disease?
"Kawasaki's disease?" Dr. Williams said. Kawasaki's, what in the world is that? Why are you talking about motorcycles; we were not in an accident. How can this be happening, what does this mean for my three year old son, could this, or will this end his very young life and mine along with his. I thought it was only flu, maybe infection but this, what is this. "Why is she not saying anything?" I thought. She just stood there looking at me, that's about the time I realized that I was not asking these questions out loud. Finally I spoke “What is Kawasaki's disease?” This is that day that we found out what this would mean for our family. "It has been five days now and his fever has not stopped burning" I said to his father. I could not explain the rash that had started to develop, nor that his eyes started looking very strange. ”The nurse said I should take him in if his fever

She also stated she needed to run some other test first to rule out some other things that could be tested for. She headed for the door but I had to ask the question; “what is Kawasaki’s disease?” “Oh, well, it’s an inflammatory disease that effects the arteries, can cause the patient to have a heart attack and can even cause death”. I felt like my heart stopped beating when she said those words. What was she saying that my son was going to die, what do you mean? I wanted to say, but I guess I did not say anything and she left the room to order the test she needed. What was going on, I could wrap my mind around what was happening and what this was. I stated watching him being so clam, only because he was feeling so

I then realized the look on the doctor’s face and that in it spoke the words that were unspoken. She started explaining to us that the mother was only 22 ½ weeks along and that she was going into premature labor. We had a decision to make -we could either let her naturally go into labor with the baby being breech (this will cause a head catch) which lessens the chance of survival or do an emergency C- section. For the first time in my life I had no way of fixing this. This was out of my hands and into the hands of God. I felt alone, desperate and frightened. I just kept thinking this wasn’t supposed to happen to me. I’m a good person! I go to church; I help people in need, and I greet people with a smile to brighten their day. So the question kept popping in mind why did this happen to me?…

Intravenous (given by vein) gamma globulin is the standard treatment for Kawasaki disease and is given in high doses. The child's condition usually greatly improves within 24 hours. It decreases the risk of damage to the arteries in the heart (coronary arteries). In an NIH (National Institute of Health) study, gamma globulin decreased the number of aneurysms by 3 to 5 times, when given in the first 10 days of illness. For children who are diagnosed after the tenth day and continue to have fever, IVIG still may be helpful. Children who still have fever 2 days after IVIG may benefit from further treatments with IVIG. Careful monitoring is necessary during gamma globulin treatment. It may rarely cause an allergy. Monitoring is…

The doctor seemed very unprofessional when he detested the way the mother, referred to him. When the mother told her daughter that he is a "nice man" and that he won't hurt her, he became very impatient and mad. This is very ironic because all parents usually tell their kids that doctors are nice people. Why did he become angry with that comment? Ironically enough, doctors are supposed to be nice to their patients and the parents of the patients, at least the professional ones. Doctors are usually extra tolerant towards kids, and are trained to handle kids like this specific patient, who do not wish to cooperate.…

HPI: A six-year-old male patient was brought into the clinic accompanied by both parents (mother and father). They said there son was feverish over the last few days reporting the highest fever of a 100.1. Parents noticed him recently touching his right ear as if he had an ear infection. The mother treated her son with Children’s Tylenol that temporarily decreased his temperature and provided a slight improvement. Parents have noticed their son lying around a little more than usual and more “sleepy”. Patient denies having a headache and loss of appetite. Patient denies urinary frequency, urgency or excessive thirst. Patient denies N/V/D. Patient denies joint pain, or muscle pain. Upon further questioning and based on my subsequent physical exam (see below), parents said they had removed a tick from his head over two weeks ago. They did not “notice” a rash. They were outdoors having a picnic in the park during one of the last sunny days of fall and think he may have gotten the tick that day.…

He hugged me tight and told me repeatedly, “It’s going to be ok baby! Be strong! I love you so much!” The doctor grabs a scalpel and forceps and the pain consumes me. I let out shrilling cry and then my body collapses as the pain diminishes from what would be a ten on the pain scale, to a four or five. Then we heard the baby scream as the doctor placed him on my chest. Overwhelmed with joy, we began to sob.…
