Operation Entebbe is popularly known as Operation Thunderbolt; the successful operation was carried out by the Israel Defense Force (IDF) Commandos. The mission was planned in Tel Aviv but the actual rescue mission took place at the Entebbe Airport in Uganda. Notably, the operation took place on July 4, 1976, approximately 2500 miles from Israel (Dunstan, 2012). Even with all the information that they had, the people that needed to make the decision had a hard time believing that the mission would end successfully. The Israeli Government did not want a replay of the botched hostage rescue of the Israeli athletes in Munich at the 1972 Olympics, which resulted in the death of six Israeli coaches and five athletes. The lack of information from the freed hostages could have forced the Israeli Government to actually comply with the Palestinian terrorist’s demands. The release the fifty-three incarcerated Palestinians would have eventually resulted in the death of dozens, even hundreds of innocent civilian lives across the world.
