Yes, I do believe that polar bears are endangered as a species now and might be in the future. It is because the extinct has been increasing throughout or to a great percentage. Polar bear population as per the data of 2010 was ranging from 20000 to 25000. A female can only deliver only 1 to 3 per littler for every 3 years and its life expectancy is 25 years this threatens the existence of polar bears in the future. The high temperatures causing the melting of ice obstruct the bears from travelling to look for food which makes them stay for long without food, this is the main causes death of polar bears.
2 What is the value of the polar bear to the United States? To humanity? Polar bear has lot of value to United States. …show more content…
Country can earn taxes and revenues because lot of tourist around the world come to see them. A polar bear also has many values for example its hides skin can be sold for $400/meter. The value may be difficult to determine and having a specific price set for its cost and benefit is difficult to determine because it hurts an ecosystem that requires its protection.
3 Is it important that humanity act to save the polar bear?
Why or why not? Yes, it is important that humanity acts to save the bears because the leading cause is because of the extinction of the polar bears. Human’s activities have been causing global warming to a very threatening or extreme level. This due to the increasing levels of environmental pollution by human being. Both human activities and industry’s activities have caused the atmospheric changes and other severe climatic changes and therefore we humans should be held accountable for the possible damages.
Therefore, Businesses should be obligated to participate in corporate social responsibility activities. And as part of corporate social responsibility corporations are required to do program to save the environment. Any harm that they have caused through global warming which has caused depletion of the ozone layer, should be corrected as soon as possible. Polar bears would easily adapt to the climatic changes but there is no way the climate is so adverse in a way that is difficult for them to adapt. Humans should find out some solutions to protect the polar bears from
extinction.
4 Can the bear be saved? What actions are required? Yes, the bears can be saved for example companies should look for ways of minimizing CO2 emissions and greenhouse emissions. The polar bears can also be brought into the same place to allow them to breed and increase so as to protect them from extinctions.
This would help reduce the risk of extinction in the short run. Jurisdictions for carbon emissions should be gained from relevant authorities.
5 Should more be done now? If so, what is feasible? The bears should be transported to one common place to facilitate their breeding and survival; this will help them breeding that would facilitate chronological increase in the bear population before the drastic climatic changes occur that would lead to complete extinction of the bears. There should be also the law that fines the companies that emit more that an agreed amount and rewards should be awarded to the companies that rarely pollute the environment or produce CO2 less than the limit. The Another feasible action is for companies in green house programs to pay for carbon offsets or for projects that will compensate for all or for part of the companies’ greenhouse emissions.
6 Would the economic and noneconomic benefits of saving the bear exceed the costs?
The economic benefits of saving a bear would include; selling the polar bear hide after it dies. The average polar bear is approximately 2.38 meters long and each meter of hide sell at $400. Therefore the economic benefits are significant but if there are many bears in existence. There are also non-economic benefits which would include having a beautiful and well loved animal species to exist in its natural habitat.
