Gates Essay # 3

Macklemore is an incredible rapper, one that has set out to change the way people view each other. The song “ Same Love” came out the summer of my sophomore year. I remember the nostalgic feeling that engulfed me when I was able to jam out to music that felt the same way about a social issue as I did. In fact, that the song was extremely popular that year showing that most people accept the issues that were in front of them.

When I was a sophomore in high school I became friends with a guy named Chance. He had moved around school for his entire life so he never had a good sense of security. When we met in Physics he opened up to me immediately. One day he decided to share his story with me. This was one that was filled with

Ben, who was my cousin, was one of my closest friends. In July, he had just turned 18 and would soon be heading off for college. I would be in 6th grade that same year. Ben was ecstatic for me and he always called me a Temple Tot. Everyone surrounding him would be hysterical because of all of the ridiculous jokes he spoke of. Ben used to tell me all of funny stories from when I was little, especially the story of when I would stop at nothing to pet the kittens in the tree. Ben had touched everyone's lives in some shape or another.…

It was the summer before my sophomore year in high school. Break was ending, and schools were opening soon. We just moved from a small town called Sikeston to Saint Charles, Missouri due to my dad’s new job. I have lived in Sikeston my whole life, and I did not fully understand why we all suddenly had to move. I was slowly starting to adjust to my new life in Saint Charles and my new school when twelve days after I moved, I received a call informing that one of my closest friends passed away. The whole conversation felt surreal, but I still remember that day, August 21st. I saw my friend Aubrey two weeks before he passed away, the happiest, sweetest kid I knew. I did not understand why that was the last time I would ever see him again. I did not understand exactly what happened. I did not understand why Aubrey out of all people had a tumor in his ear. That was the first time that someone close to me…

I remember when I was in 1st grade; I went to a new elementary school. Almost everyone that was in my class had been going to that school since pre-kindergarten and had broken off into little groups within the class. I didn’t talk much and nobody made an approach to talk to me first. It was like that for a couple of days but then somebody took the initiative and talked to me. She introduced me to other groups and slowly, I started making friends. She was brave because although everyone else made the decision to ignore me, she took a stand and started talking to me. This was courageous because she did what others did not want to do and went against the flow.…

An example of a poetic device that Macklemore uses in this song is allusion. One allusion Macklemore uses is “Groundhog Day life repeat each time”(l.59). Macklemore mentions the movie Groundhog Day the main character’s life is on repeat and no matter what he does the same day happens again even if the day before ended in death. This is also showing that in his struggle with drugs his life was the same thing every day he would smoke and it became a routine. One other example of an allusion is “rationalize the stuff that I’d try after I listen to Dedication/ but he’s an alien, I’d sip that pass out and play Playstation”, (ll.51-52). This line is an allusion to Lil Wayne because in most of his songs he refers to himself as an alien or a Martian. This is also another reference to Lil Wayne because he has an album titled Dedication. Macklemore uses allusions to show things that you might not see at first until you realize that he is referring to that to show emphasis.…

Aphra Behn shows us that our conventional idea of love can sometimes be flawed in her poem “On Her Loving Two Equally.” Loving two people simultaneously is possible because we love our parents equally. What this poem says about love might make more sense and seem less strange if we think of other nonromantic kinds of love, like the love we share with our parents. When I look closely at this poem I believe it may mean a lot mean more than just loving two people equally. The differences in how Behn writes about the two men leads me to view her passion as not referring to two equal relationships. Instead of two equal relationships, I believe Behn writes about one stable and normal relationship, and one infuriating kind of relationship.…

That is so gay. You are a faggot. Take a second and think about how many times you encounter these phrases on a daily basis. Derogatory terms such as these are some among many other hateful anti-homosexual sayings that are used regularly by adolescents across the country. Why? How have these revolting expressions become part of all of our daily vocabularies? How have the terms ‘gay’ and ‘faggot’ become synonymous with ‘lame’ or ‘not cool’? With the youth of our nation bred into constant subconscious hateful thought, there cannot be a positive future for the morale of our society. Macklemore’s new song and music video, Same Love, aims to point the youth of our society in a new forward thinking direction. Macklemore, one of the fastest rising artists in the hip-hop industry, and currently the number one artist on iTunes without a major record deal, recognizes the issues within our society and uses his influence to attempt to make a difference. Hip-hop music is a huge part the youth of our society, and is very influential on the way we all act, speak, and think. Rappers use the term ‘fag’ to insult another person whether he or she is gay or not, and have in many cases caused their listeners to do the same. Through Same Love Macklemore points out the flaws in this way of life and preaches of moving forward. Because of Macklemore’s own influence in our culture, the youth of society, and rhetorical strategies he has used, I believe he has done an incredible job advocating his message. Through Same Love, Macklemore discusses society’s false predispositions on homosexuality, the use of derogatory terms in hip-hop, and how we as a society need to stop avoiding the sexual equality movement and move forward.…

One time I was at the mall and I saw this guy who was dressed in dark jeans and a graphic t-shirt. He had crazy hair and piercings. He was with a group of friends that looked just like him. I judged him and thought he was probably a trouble maker. He then walked over to the piano that sits in the middle of the walkway in the mall, it has a big “Do not Touch” sign on it. I was just wondering what kind of prank he would pull or when mall security was going to show up. Then he lifted up the lid and scooted the bench up to the piano. Then he started playing; he was playing the most beautiful song I had ever heard. It gave me chills. The whole way home all I could do was think about him and how sorry I had been to judge him.…
