The purpose of a monument is to commemorate a significant historical person or event that took place. One example of a monument is the Washington State Monument. This Monument was built to acknowledge and commemorate George Washington in his efforts as being once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first American president. Not all, but in some cases monuments do have the ability to bring people together. The Washington Monument stands more as a symbol of the U.S., but it can still have the power to bring people together. The Colosseum is a stone amphitheater, and it was the first building of its type (Sporre). It was constructed during the Flavian dynasty under emperor Vespasian in 70 A.D., and it was completed 10 years later during the reign of Vespasian’s son, Titus. The Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Amphitheater because it was built by the Flavian dynasty. However, the name was changed because the Colosseum was built next to the Colossus of Nero. The Getty museum. J Paul Getty was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 15, 1892 and died in England 1976 (age 84). In 1945 J Paul Getty purchased a home in Malibu. During his years of living there he collected historical paintings, statues, and furniture. Nine years later he then decided to open his home to the public to share the art collections, Greek and Roman antiques, 18th century furniture, and European paintings. After some visits he then decided in 1968 to began work on his plans to build a Roman Style villa to serve as a museum for the public, because of how fascinated he was with the ancient world of the Mediterranean. I visited the Salvador Museum on Wednesday March 8th, 2006. Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali was born in Catalonia, Spain on May 11th, 1904. His parents were Salvador Dali I Cusi and Felipa Domenech Ferres. His older brother, also named Salvador died prior to the birth of Dali. His sister Ana Maria was three years younger than him. At the age of 13 he began visiting the School of Art and his first painting was produced. It was made in 1913 called Vilabertin. Dali's father was very disciplinary, while Dali's mother encouraged him to draw. In 1917 Dali's father organized an exhibition of his charcoal drawings in their home, then in 1919 Dali had his first public exhibition at the Municipal Theater in Figueres. 2 years…
Hudson was then hired by the Dutch East India Company in 1609, to try to find the Northwest Passage farther south. On this trip, in a ship called the Half Moon, Hudson sailed to Nova Scotia, and then sailed south. He found what is now called the Hudson River. Hudson is credited with discovering the location which is now New York City (although the Verrazzano had previously sailed by the area in 1524). Hudson sailed into New York's harbor on September 3, 1609 and noted what an excellent harbor it was. Hudson sailed up the river about 150 miles (240 km) and noted the abundance of rich land, but realized that this was not a waterway to India. During our trip the the Metropolitan Museum, our class explored various exhibits, including the Greeks, early Tribal works, Renaissance art, and 19th century art. One piece in particular that stood out to me, and reminded me of a text we’ve read this semester, was Prayer in the Mosque by Jean-Lèon Gèrome in 1871(87.15.130). This oil on canvas depicts the interior of a mosque in seventh century Egypt and reminded me of the readings we had done on Al Andalus from Jarbel Rodriguez, where the description of a mosque in Spain is found.…
It all started in 1620, when people from England fled their country to escape religious persecution. The pilgrims new that they had to cross the ocean because of stories they heard about explorers finding a whole land only occupied by tribes. More than 100 pilgrims traveled the long treacherous journey on the ship named “The Mayflower.” There were many storms, and the travel took months, but they finally made it to the new world. The pilgrims landed in “Cape Cod” where it was a good place to start their first settlement, The Plymouth Colony.…
