In the University of California Davis the students and staff members are to abide by the Code of Academic Conduct. UC Davis promotes Honesty, Fairness, and Integrity through the Code of Academic Conduct. Plagiarism is one of the main focal points in this code. Any violation through plagiarism will result in disciplinary actions such as probation, suspension, and possible dismissal. The definition of plagiarism directly from the Code of Academic Conduct:
“Taking credit for any work created by another person. Work includes, but is not limited to books, articles, experimental methodology or results, compositions, images, lectures, computer programs, internet postings.
Copying any work belonging to another person …show more content…
without indicating that the information is copied and properly citing the source of the work.
If not directly copied, using another person’s presentation of ideas without putting it in your own words or form and not giving proper citation.
Creating false citations that do not correspond to the information you have used.” ("UC Davis - Student Support & Judicial Affairs - Reporting.”)
As a result of the violation, whether the student plagiarized intentionally or unintentionally, the seriousness still stands. The student will receive an automatic zero or F grade on the assignment.
If the student admits to plagiarism, and takes complete responsibility, the student may have a chance at the reduction of penalty.
Plagiarism is a very serious violation of the Honor Code, leaving the student at the likely possibility of the removal from UC Davis. This applies even if the student is a first time offender. The student will be notified through an email if suspected of plagiarism. After being informed the student will then meet with the Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs , also known as an “OSSJA ”. The student then, hears the punishment and is given the choice to disagree. If this is so, then the student will apply for an appeal, and the Campus Judicial Board (CJB) are who grants or denies the student's …show more content…
appeal.
In order for this university to continue their exceptionally high rankings, the enforcement of the Plagiarism Policy is strongly dependant on the support of each student. Each student is expected to know that they:
“Are responsible to know what constitutes cheating. Ignorance is not an excuse. Are required to do their own work unless otherwise allowed by the instructor. Are expected to help prevent cheating by reminding others about this Code and not helping other students gain an unfair advantage. Are strongly encouraged to hold each other accountable by reporting any form of suspected cheating to the University. Must respect the copyright privileges of works produced by faculty, the University, and other copyright holders. Shall not threaten, intimidate or pressure instructors or teaching assistants, or interfere with grading any coursework. Shall not disrupt classes or interfere with the teaching or learning environment.” ("UC Davis - Student Support & Judicial Affairs - Reporting.”)
UC Davis is ranked 41 of the National Universities, ranked 39 of Best Global Universities and ranked 11 of the Top Public Schools.UC Davis has a reputation on the line and must not give in to plagiarism. UC Davis has a website pdf file that can be informative if taken advantage of appropriately. The title of the pdf is “Avoiding Plagiarism and Mastering the Art of Scholarship” covering the definition of plagiarism, guidelines to plagiarism, the difference between paraphrasing and plagiarism, along with examples of correct and incorrect citations. Students can learn from this pdf that plagiarism not only affects the way the school is represented, but also affects the value of the student’s degree. The University of California Davis’s standings might descend and so will the worth of the Universities Diplomas. The students work hard and by plagiarizing it affects them directly. Under “Why be concerned about plagiarism?”in the pdf, one reason given is that they will not get the individual constructive criticism that will make their work better. Their work will not improve because they’re are not learning how to put their thoughts down instead of using others. This kind of cheating can lead to fines of copyright or even in imprisonment.
UC Davis has made this pdf to help its students to succeed and to clarify the uses of citations.
The pdf is a clarification on when, how, and why plagiarism is used. Plagiarism is a serious violation in the code of conduct and will not be tolerated, this pdf file makes it easier to comply with. Students are better educated on plagiarism by reading this pdf, which may greatly improve their success in the University of California Davis College. The same pdf file has a “How to Cite Sources”section where it informs the reader of the mla format and different methods of citing that could also be used. The section also gives examples of citings to give the student a visual perspective of how the citation should look. This pdf goes into depth of the difference between common knowledge and
plagiarism:
“Beware of “common knowledge.” You may not have
to cite “common knowledge,” but the fact must
really be commonly known. That George Orwell
was the author of the anti-totalitarian allegory
Animal Farm is common knowledge; that Orwell
died at age 46 in 1951 is not.2
When in doubt, cite. Better to be safe than not give
credit when you should!” ("UC Davis - Student Support & Judicial Affairs pdf - Reporting.”)
