“If you are determined enough and willing to pay the price, you can get it done.” -Unknown Will Stoneman was a 17 year old boy from Birch Ridge, South Dakota. He lived on a farm with his parents and his team of sled dogs. When Will and his father were out exercising their dogs, Will’s father slipped into the icy water and drowned. After that, the farm was in danger of being sold. Will is determined to win this 522 mile race to save the farm. After weeks of harsh training, he takes a train up to Winnipeg, Canada, were the race begins. He enters the race and fearlessly battles his way through 13 days of freezing weather, evil competitors, and injuries. Will Stoneman is as determined, courageous, and admirable as a 17 year old could
be. One of Will's greatest traits is determination. His determination shows when he trains and signs up for the race. During the race, people tell him he can't do it, that he's too young. Despite all of this, he races like there's no tomorrow and becomes a fearsome competitor. When his mother suggests that they might lose the farm, he says, “Then we'll lose it fighting, but we're not going to lose.” If that's not determination then I don't know what is. From the middle to the end of the race, one of the sponsors bribes Will, asking him to quit the race. He denies every single time. The sponsor offers great amounts of money, but Will refuses. When Borg sends a dog to kill Gus, (Will’s lead dog) Gus gets badly injured. When Will and his dogs reach the next checkpoint, he has to decide whether to leave Gus there or to continue taking him with. He tells Gus, “We started this together, we'll finish this together!” Will Stoneman was determined to finish the race with his whole team, even though Gus could cause a disadvantage. Will was also courageous and admirable, but his determination stuck out more than anything else. He shows these three traits throughout the movie. I think the trait that Will embodied most was determination because the definition of determination is firmness in purpose. As you can see from my description above, he has determination like no other. What would you do if you were in his positions? Would you show the same type of determination? Or would you back down easily? I think Will Stoneman is an excellent example for people young and old. Are you as determined, courageous, and admirable as Will Stoneman?
