Organ donation is the process of giving an organ or a part of an organ for the purpose of transplantation into another person. One donor can make a difference between fifty to one hundred peoples’ lives, whether it is saving them from death, giving them a few more years to live, or even giving them hope. In the year of 2012 there were 14,013 Organ Donors resulting in 28,052 organ transplants. However, in the United States many people believe multiple different myths about organ donation, which has lead to a decrease in organs being donated, nearly twenty people die a day waiting for an organ donation.
In the United States 110,460 people are waiting for an organ. Of these 110,460 people, not even half of them will get to experience the joy of hearing their pager go off, signaling to them that there is a possible organ for them to receive. “Every hour another person in the United States dies because of the lack of an organ to provide a lifesaving transplant,” This statement, written in “Sheehy’s Emergency Nursing Principles and Practices,” should make people think. Most all of the people who are dying every hour easily could be saved if more people signed up to be organ donors.
