and ugly? Between the artists, and the extras in their videos, sex has a good grip on the music industry, which will only get tighter with time. Just as the music industry, magazines are also very sexually oriented with their content.
Go to any newsstand and you will see exactly what I'm talking about. Seven out of ten magazines that you pick up will have an attractive person on the cover. But the front cover is not where the sexuality ends, as Joyce Garity explains in her essay, "Is Sex All That Matters?". "On the inside front cover, an advertisement .in snug dresses, their legs bared to just below the crotch" explained Garity. I know that I would much rather buy a magazine with a picture of Jennifer Lopez on the cover, than one with a picture of Drew Carey. People Magazine's 50 Best looking is one their best sellers, but even People's best looking list cannot contend with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, which is anticipated for months before it's release. Sex always has and always will have a place in the magazine
industry. The most obvious sexual stronghold in an industry has to be sex in Television, "a sexual Shangri-la," according to Joyce Garity. There are hardly any ugly people on TV. Sure there's the occasional Jay Leno and Al Roker, but for the most part television is dominated by the "beautiful people". Television (although still very biased) is getting better. For instance, the hit television show "the King of Queens" follows the lives of Doug and Carrie Heffernan played by Kevin James and Leah Remini. Now if you've ever viewed the show King of Queens, then you know that Kevin James is not the usual television star, especially not for Leah Remini. Television has come along way, but still has a longer way to go, but the industry is starting to become a little more balanced. Shows such as: the King of Queens, Everybody loves Raymond and According to Jim are growing in popularity, because of their content, and not because their casts are made up of solely the "bold and the beautiful". This shows that the industry is headed in the direction of a balance between the good, the bad and certainly the ugly. Sex will always be used to sell and or market products, whether it is music, magazines, or television. Though it is evident that some people are moving towards a resolution to the problem there is still along way to go. And if the consumer keeps buying sex, the producer will keep selling it.
