In the diverse world of medicine, there seems to be a specific field to deal with every part of the body. Now to make this easier, -ology or –logia means the study of. Eight individual specialties caught my particular attention. The term Dermatology derives from the Greek word derma – skin. As you can see, it deals with the study of the skin and its diseases, in the widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails. The term Cardiology derives from the Greek word Kardia – heart, specifically the human heart. It is the study of the human heart, treatments of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, electrophysiology. Radiology is a study that encompasses the whole body by the use of imaging to both treat and diagnose diseases. By use of X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Gynecology or Gynaecology is another interesting study; the Greek word gyne or gynaika meaning woman. As you can see, Gynecology is the study of a woman, they specialize in the study of the female reproductive system, such as the uterus, vagina, and ovaries. Hepatology – the Greek words hepar or hepato means the liver. Typically, the liver is considered a sub-specialty of gastroenterology. Hepatology incorporates the study of the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas as well as the management of their disorders. Neurology is derived from the Greek word neuron which means Nerve. It is a specialty dealing with disorders of the nervous system, such as, diagnosis and treatments of all categories of disease involving the central and peripheral nervous system.
