Assignment 02 for HMPYC80 In the Department of Psychology, University of South Africa
ABSTRACT Narcotics Anonymous is an organisation that has no paid workers; all the service is done on a voluntary basis by members of Narcotics Anonymous who are recovering addicts. Within Narcotics Anonymous there are various sub-committees that facilitate in carrying out responsibilities needed to keep the organisation running and growing, one of these committees is Hospitals & Institutions. Hospitals & Institutions have had to suspend service in certain facilities in the Western Cape due to a decline in experienced members continued service. This research aims to study the attitudes and perceptions of former Hospitals & Institutions volunteers to further understand their decision to stop service. Interviews will be conducted in order to explore the reasons for this behaviour. Data will be gathered from the transcribed interviews and thematic analysis will be used to analyse, code and organise findings in themes. The objective of the project is to understand why experienced volunteers are stopping to do service and then be able to propose new ways of operating to the Hospitals & Institutions sub-committee so that retention of volunteers is increased.
