Introduction

Bank is a financial institution whose main function is to mobilize fund from surplus economy to deficit economy. Banks collect deposits at the lowest possible cost and provide loans and advances at higher cost. The difference between two is the profit for the bank. But bank has some duties and responsibilities for the society and the world. Green Banking concept is one of them. Green banking is a component of the global initiative by a group of stakeholders to save environment. It means promoting environmental-friendly practices and reducing carbon footprint from the banking activities. Green banking is like that of normal banking, which considers all the social and environmental factors with an aim to protect the environment and conserve natural resources.

Background

The banking sector can play a significant role in protecting the environment by financing support to high impact environmentally sensitive sectors. As part of the Rio+20 Summit, Bangladesh and Vietnam jointly organized a side event on June 19, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to discuss how to ensure green development in the backdrop of rapidly changing climate. Global warming is an issue that calls for a global response. The rapid change in climate will be too great to allow many eco-systems to suitably adapt, since the change have direct impact on biodiversity, agriculture, forestry, dry land, water resources and human health. Banks hold a unique position in an economic system that can affect production, business and other economic activities through their financing schemes and thus may contribute to protect environment. It means
