My experience with failure came with athletics. For my whole life I have always been involved in sports like soccer, tennis, basketball. When I was in the fourth grade I joined a swim team and that was the first and really only sport that I stuck with; swimming came naturally to me, and it was something that I could do year round and I loved every minute of it. However, once I was in high school I stopped swimming and joined my high school’s cross country team. My dad was a runner all throughout high school so I thought it would be a good idea to give the sport my father loved a chance. The cross country team allowed me to grow, and I learned things about myself including that fact that I can’t run. It’s not that I can’t physically run, I have…
Kevin Conroy once said, “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. High school was my time to stop fooling around. The first day of high school, I awoke to the aroma of coffee brewing on the stove. As I get ready to head out my sister approached me, and told me “Education is the key that opens the door many possibilities you can be and do in your near future” I was so nervous the sweat started dripping from my palms, and I suddenly felt 15 degrees hotter. I was nervous, I knew this is the time to get serious. Immediately a thought came across “ how well I do these four years can affect my entire life”. At first high school might look like a time to have fun and have no worries, which was my initial thought. Later on you start to realize that you need work hard. I thought “How would my future look? I don’t want to end up hopelessly. I want to make something of myself. Sometimes it can be hard though. I just have to work through the pain. At this point it’s make it or break it, success is my only…
Resiliency is an important factor to have present in one’s life. Taking this resiliency quiz opened my eyes to how I am not as resilient as I thought I was. Some of the question asked in this quiz made me assess my own culture, such as gender and sexual orientation. A crucial part of being resilient is realizing what protective factors are present in one’s life. Many of the factors surprised me because I did not even know they were considered protective factors. Identifying the resiliency builders I would like to add to my repertoire was easy because a majority of those builders are not present in my everyday, and I would like to change that. However, I know it is going to be difficult to add these into my life. The resiliency framework is used in all aspect of social work. I decided to use it to promote resiliency in people with eating disorder. It is important for a person to have great environment protective factors so that they know…
