“Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration to millions through her story of faith, determination, and hope.” According to her own website she was born into a family of surfers on February 8, 1990, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where she began surfing at a young age. She entered her first competition at the age of eight, where she won both short and long board divisions. “This sparked a love for surf competition within her spirit.” Bethany tells her own life story in her website… she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai’s North shore when she was only thirteen years old, on October 31, 2003. According to Bethany, she lost over 60% of her blood and the attack left her with a severed left arm. She went through several surgeries and she was then “on her way to recovery with an unbelievably positive attitude.” “Lifeguards and doctors believe her strong water sense and faith in God helped get her through the traumatic ordeal.” Bethany went on to continue pursuing her goal to become a professional surfer, just one month after the attack. This was a miracle! She continued to enter and excel in many competitions. “Since losing her arm, Bethany’s story has been told in hundreds of media outlets and she has been recognized with numerous awards, public appearances, and various speaking engagements.”…

A Man for all Seasons is a play that was written by prolific English writer, Robert Bolt. Born in 1924, he worked as an insurance agent before joining the World War II as a Royal Air Force officer. He worked as a school teacher, after his time at the force, before embarking on writing this particular play. The same year he wrote it; it featured as a play in London and New York. It is crucial to understand the background of the play to understand it with more power. According to Kincaid, it is useful to understand that for many years in England there had been hostility to the clergy, because the Church had great worldly powers, property, and wealth, while many members of the clergy were corrupt and self-seeking. (11) With this play, Bolt wanted to bring out the strong characteristic steadiness of standing on one’s feet and owns ground in what one believes irrespective of what others think or say.…

Adversity, as Horace so claims, does not elicit talents from people more than any other circumstances; rather, it provides a platform for people with talents to showcase their skills in applicable circumstances. Not all of the many thousands of people who have faced adversities in America’s history have come out with grand talents; in fact, most of them don’t. For every Frederick Douglass, there are tens of thousands of freedmen who, suffering much, accomplish little. The concept of adversity eliciting talents is a textbook case of confirmation bias; people only see cases of people who have accomplished so much with so little because it is a story all like to hear. So many people cite Bill Gates as a successful college dropout; so few like…

Recently a tragedy has occurred in New York and many other states being known as “Hurricane Sandy” leaving a mark on our lives. Sometimes in life when natural disasters occur or in general when unfortunate cases occur adversity can truly bring out the real person whether for good or bad. I personally believe adversity brings out the best because in most cases you see people helping by any means and actually some have sacrificed their lives just for the safety of others. I mean if this doesn’t bring out the best, what does it bring out? It can be officers, firefighters, public and many more trying to help out and make a difference showing that they care.…
