From the time we are born our parents are constantly teaching us respect. The first form of respect I learned was respect for my elders. Even if you don’t like the person you should still show them respect because they have been on the earth longer and know more than the younger person so there is that respect that should be present. Everywhere you look and go there are people showing respect for complete strangers just by saying hi or asking them if they need help finding something or get something off a high shelf for a shorter person having trouble reaching it.
In my opinion the place that uses the most respect is the us military. We are constantly greeting the higher rank even though we have never met each other. For example when a private first class sees an officer coming they get six paces away from them and render a hand salute and gives the officer the greeting of the day. Respect is also shown when a junior enlisted soldier such as a private first class is talking to a noncommissioned officer such a sergeant first class and the junior enlisted is standing at parade rest for the sergeant. This goes for all branches not just one in specific.
Respect is a two way street though so to say. Just because one person is older does not mean they should look down on a younger person for messing up for not knowing something the older person knew. Everybody has something that another person will not know so age should not mean anything if somebody is trying to teach or give advice to another. In the military I have noticed that a lot of noncommissioned officers look down on junior enlisted soldiers just because of their rank. That should not be the case because chances are that soldier will be a noncommissioned officer one day so the senior soldier should be teaching the younger soldier everything they can before one of them moves on to their next duty assignment. I also see noncommissioned officers looking down and talking down on newly commissioned officers
