“Women’s Education” In the article “Male Pride and Female Prejudice” John Tierney covers a lot of points about how women getting college degrees has somewhat changed social norms. One point that stood out the most is how divorce rates have went up a substantial amount. In today’s society, divorce rates have seemed to increase due to the incline of women’s college graduate percentile. In the old days it was expected that women stay home and keep the house clean while their husbands brought the bread home. Today many women do not wish to do that at all, even when some men still expect it. Most women who were verbally, mentally, and physically abused by their husbands were basically stuck staying with them. Now women have the intelligence and the ability to get out of those not so ideal situations. In other words women do not put up with as much nonsense as they use to. Also women are finding themselves getting divorces because they can financially support themselves without a husband. In the past women were dependent on their husband’s income. Having a college degree opens up many opportunities for women, and they can be financially stable on their own. Women have a bigger trait of independence than men, so when the opportunity comes to become an independent individual, most of the time they take it. Most importantly, because of education women now know their rights. A lot of the time women want to get out of a marriage but simply are not educated on their rights. Without knowledge of their rights women have not been able to do anything about being in a bad marriage. Men can sometimes manipulate women into thinking that there is no way out and without knowing any better women believe it. It is very clear that divorce rates are increasing because women are getting better educated. This could be a positive impact on society eventually, but only time will tell. Thanks to education women know their rights, are becoming financially independent, and not putting up with domestic violence.

According to Office for National Statistics, research has shown that in 1996 there were 5,223 nuclear families and in 2012 the number of nuclear families has decreased to 4,610 families. It could be argued that the nuclear family is longer the norm because statistics even support this. One particular reason for this would be that the divorce rate has increased, research shows that now 40% of marriages now end in divorce. This would then leaned to lone-parent (single) families and reconstituted families. In the 1940s women were seen as housewives and mothers that didn’t have any other life, having an education was simply out of the question. Whereas women today go into much further education as men which therefore gives them a much higher status and independence. This may be the reason for why divorce rates have increased rapidly. The main reason for why women used to get married was to reproduce as they couldn’t do anything else other than that. Women had no financial support for which they had to rely on their husbands. In today’s society women don’t need any financial support as they are independent and self-reliant. Feminist’s state that they are exploited within the family, they are taken advantage of. They have to do all the housework,…

Back in the early 1900’s divorce wasn’t looked at often. Due to religious values, cultural or even moral views, divorce was not familiar. In the late 1900’s to early 2000’s numbers of divorced women age fifteen and older went up through the years drastically until the year of 1990 when divorce rates started to decrease. According to the article by David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe, the chances of divorce may be much lower than expected. To summarize it states that with a higher income, or having a child after being married for a while, longer marriage, and religious values will decrease your chances of divorce.…

It also turns out that wage gaps in the labor market play a big part in motivating women to finish school. Men who drop out face no financial penalty in their entry level salaries. Women on the other hand, pay a steep price right away for dropping out, since female dropouts earn entry-level pay that averages out to be substantially less than what males earn. Female dropouts face worse job prospects since they are more likely to be employed in lower paying service work, while men have more opportunities in higher paying jobs such as manufacturing, construction or…

Since the 1960’s divorce rate began to increase dramatically but the biggest rise in divorce rate was in 1972 when it doubled and was 120,000. The divorce rate continued to rise and in 1993 reached its peak at 180,000. There has been explanations for the rise in divorce which are: secularisation, changes in law, divorce had become cheaper and also changing attitudes in society especially with women as they had begun to receive more rights. By the times divorce had become a lot more socially acceptable.…

Women are more likely than men to want a divorce, and more women are divorced than men. That is because men are more likely to remarry than women and do so at a faster rate. There has been a moderate drop in couples that have been “very happy” in their marriage in recent decades. People are more content than happy in their relationships. Since the 1970’s when the No Fault Divorce Law was put into place, there was a large spike in divorce rates because people could divorce for no reason at all, and many divorced because they were not satisfied or happy in marriage. Geographic location is a factor in divorce. For instance, the East has a far lower divorce rate than the South or West. That can be attributed for the cultural differences between the geographic areas. Popenoe and Whitehead stated there are six factors that can help lower a person’s chance at divorce, “ So if you are a reasonably well-educated person with a decent income, come from an intact family and are religious, and marry after age twenty-five without having a baby first, your chances of divorce are very low indeed,” (25). Divorce has become a common part of today’s society.…

Decreased stigma of divorce in society from the 1960s has led to divorce rates increasing, because it is no longer seen as a negative thing in the way it used to be, it has become more socially acceptable for a couple to get a divorce, therefore more divorces are occurring because they know the possibility of them being shunned by people for just having a divorce is not present anymore. If anything, people are now encouraged by themselves, family and friends if they are not happy to get a divorce this is largely through the media and its portrayal of the perfect romance leading to rising expectations of people, women in particular.…

One reason daily life has greatly improved for women today is because women aren’t as pressured to get married now. In the 1950’s most women married after high school and fell into their traditional roles right away. The U.S. marriage rate was at an all-time high and couples were tying the knot, on average, younger than ever before. Getting married right out of high school or while in college was considered the norm. Now, studies show American women are waiting longer than ever to get married. The average age at first marriage hit a record high of 24.5 years old in 1994, up from 20 years old in the mid 1950’s. That’s the oldest age since the Census Bureau started asking about the age at marriage in 1890. There are also many changes in today’s families; fewer women staying at home, fewer children born to families, and more women in college. Now men are able to stay home with the kids and become a “stay-at-home dad” while the woman “brings home the bacon”.…

In the passage, Larson mentioned several times about well-educated women stand for the least chance to get married, her words may mislead readers to think that men will get frightened by a woman’s degree. In fact, this is a self-mockery joke written by a female PHD student on social media, she was complaining her overwhelmed work took over her personal time. Plus, education brings free mind and critical thinking to the modern women, they know what's best for them. And educated women concern children will come with family, and they will be the central of their life, take away or minimize their personal life. Larson did bring the general picture to the reader, but she miscounts the thoughts of educated women.…

In America studies done by Jenifer L. Bratter and Rosalind of the Education Resource Information Center found that the 1 percent increase unemployment rate affected the decrease of 1 percent of divorce rates in America in 2011.This finding of this research makes a lot of sense because people were financially challenged to afford the legal cost. Age of marriage affects divorce in America research been by Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield Missouri stats that when a couples that got married under the age of 25 as a higher chance of getting divorce than those who got married after that age. Every day in America another woman becomes a mother. In an average year 4,248,000 women in the United States become mothers (Ventura, 2012). “One out of every three American children is born to a single mother” (Single Mothers 2006). With divorces still at 856,000 a year (Amato, 2010) thousands of children are suffering from single parent families. Divorce is not only hard on children but also women. Most women do not have higher educations before the divorce and this causes financial hardships. Due to this hardship women return to college in hopes to seek a higher education and be able to provide better for their children. The review of literature not only demonstrated the amount of stress one goes through but also the financial burdens they are faced with during this time. Literature came to show although the difficulties during these times were rough, but the outcomes were beneficial.…

Martin, a sociologist at the University of Maryland." This is a fact directly stated by a professor who is credible and correct. This is an effective use of logos because this is proof that a college degree directly affects marriage. Women will take this information and believe that graduating with a degree will increase their chances of being married in the future. While that is one use of logos, there are dozens more. Kate Zernike also states, "Mr. Martin, who has written about women and divorce, said that three decades ago, about 30 percent of women who had graduated from college said it should be harder to get a divorce. Now, about 65 persent says so, he said." Once again, Zernike quoted the sociological professor with excellent credibility, allowing for practical use of…
