The Great Gatsby Response to Literature The Great Gatsby is a book based on the true American dream, where everyone believes they can get what they truely want from life, whether it be love, money, or just friends who care for each other. Though the book makes that so called dream seem true, it is all just an illusion thats not really what it seems to be. The book starts off with the narrator Nick talking about the time he had out west in New York with this man named Gatsby, though he just seems to be a floater in the story the other characters are full of wonder and dreams. Gatsby throughout the story is a man of mystery and lies that make him who he is though in the end render him lost in the reality he never truely lived. While Daisy, Nicks second cousin, seems to be a ditsy blond who doesn't know what she is talking about, really comes alive through all that she struggles through. There are some characters in the book like Jordan who never really seem to understand what they should about life in the west. The story is mostly based out of East and West Egg where the families with Old money and New money interact, and those woth no money or hopes in the Valley of Ashes collide. The American dream for Gatsby was the green light that symbolized money, the love of his life Daisy, and his obsession to uphold the illusion he has created. The green light is a light that sits on the end of Daisy's dock across the sound on East egg. Gatsby associates this light with the hope that Daisy knows that he is there and that she still loves him. He learns though that she never held onto that love and that she fell in love with Tom who is seen as a cheater and liar. Gatsby thought that after having Nick get her over for tea that she would fall back into his arms and in a way she did. One day when it is overly hot she suggests that her, Jordan, Tom, Gatsby and Nick go into the city to do something that wasn't boring per say. While in the city they, Tom and Gatsby, get into a
