Retribution in The Possibility of Evil
In society today, justice is served in order to attain fairness and moral equality. In Shirley
Jacksons The Possibility of Evil, justice is served by seeking revenge, the main character got a taste of their own medicine and suffered for her actions. The first demonstration of justice was when Bob Crane retaliated by sending a letter to Mrs. Strangeworth stating, “Look out at what used to be your roses (Jackson, 228).” That is an effective way to serve justice because the roses symbolized her families tradition and therefore have deep moral value in her life. Bob Crane gets revenge for the wrongs Mrs. Strangeworth has committed against him, hence justice is served.
Moreover Mrs. Strangeworth gets a taste of her own medicine. When she looked at the letters she told herself, “ It looks like one of my own letters (Jackson, 228).” Bob Crane uses the same method as Mrs. Strangeworth to write the letter. He addresses it the same way Mrs. Strangeworth does and same style. Justice was served because now that Mrs. Strangeworth saw what it was like to get her letter everything was fair between her and her victim. Ultimately Mrs.
Strangeworth suffers for her bad intentions towards Mr. Crane and others people in the town. “
She began to cry silently for the wickedness of the world (Jackson, 228).” Mrs. Strangeworth is showing that she’s deeply hurt due to the loss of her roses. Also the pain Mrs. Strangeworth inflicted on the others has finally caught up with her. Justice is served because she got what she deserved and she might get an idea as to how her actions impacted others. In The Possibility Of
Evil by Shirley Jackson justice was served through revenge, giving others a taste of what they did, and causing people to suffer. If justice gets served then one can get their retribution.

Her ex-boyfriend that she got in trouble with in 1974 was released two years after their arrest. Therefore a 2 year sentence with the escape charge included would have been fair. She has also written a book to help motivate others to stay from behind bars.…

According to the story, the human understanding of justice is that it revolves around the actions assumed by the law rather than the actual outcomes. The idea of justice constructed upon the process accepted is based on the simple fact that it ensures that all the pertinent issues are addressed. Additionally, if the process is not followed correctly, it’ll become too complex to explain to the accuser how an action done good to them will now make up for an action done wrong to them before. This idea should be applied in today’s culture because the public is accountable for serving justice and it is obligated to follow the correct process in doing so…

I believe that retribution should be the foremost goal of the criminal justice system in the United States today because of its perspective of “an eye for an eye”. Retribution is a theory that states that people should be punished for that crime that they have committed equally to what they have done (396). It is not like the other two goals of punishment, which is deterrence and rehabilitation that does not make much of an impact on criminals we see today. Deterrence has many problems that arise with it and is not very affective, such as a criminal would commit the crime again in knowing the severity of the time, cost, and if they would even get caught doing so (339). Furthermore, in the case of rehabilitation only 35% of criminals…

Ms.Strangeworth is sneaky and conniving this is shown by the way she discusses her letters.for example she doesn't use stationery that has the “strangeworth house” written on it instead she uses the colored paper that is common in town. this displays the is in trying to conceal her identity and is important because perhaps she feels that perhaps what she is doing is harmful in someway. In addition she “used a dull stud of the pencil and wrote in childish block print. Ms.Strangeworth did all of that so she wouldn't get caught writing the letters she had to disguise so the people she wrote the letters to wouldn't get hurt and wouldn't know she is a cruel woman. these are some examples of how manipulative the character is; how ever the worst is yet to come.…

Is justice served in punishment? There are many factors that should be considered as to whether or not justice is being served by the punishment given. The short story “Punishment” written by Rabindranath Tagore is about two brothers and their wives. The story begins when the two brothers return home from work and hear that their wives have been screaming and yelling at each other again. The elder brother Dukhiram demands that his wife Radha get his food. Radha responds to her husband by telling him there is no food in the house and asks him if she should go out and earn it. Dukhiram is angered by his wife’s reply, grabs a farm knife and lunges at her hitting her in the head with it. Radha dies a within minutes of being struck by the knife. Within a short time after the incident the landlord Ramlochan shows up at the house to collect the rent the family is behind on and sees Radha lying on the floor dead. Chidham (Dukhiram younger brother) immediately began stating that his wife killed Radha. Chidham, in order to save the life of his brother placed the blame on his wife and began begging Ramlochan to help him. Chidham and his wife Chandara both passionately loved each other. Chandara could not believe what her husband had just done. In the end Chandara choses to be found guilty and is punished by death for a crime she did not commit. Chandara was unwilling to participate in the lies that her husband was asking of her and the lies of the corrupt and unjust system that surrounded her. Even after Chidham offers Chandara an alibi she refuses by keeping her silence. In the story “Punishment” it is made very clear that women are not equal to men when it comes to freedom and nature. The question of “is justice served by the punishment given” is dependent on the situation at hand, the crime committed and the feelings of those who feel they are victims.…

She tries to hide her true colours with her outside appearance. Furthermore, her letters symbolize evil because they are insensitive and harsh. The letters are supposed to help and guide people in the right direction but they just provoked people and caused more evil. There is also the use of symbolism in relation to Miss Strangeworth’s rose bushes. Miss Strangeworth received a letter that said, “Look out at what used to be your roses” (255). The sender of the letter cut down her roses off the bush, exposing the nasty thorns beneath. This is a symbol of Miss Strangeworth. She is a seemingly nice, old lady but on the inside she is a nasty lady. The author’s characterization also contributed to the theme: the idea of being a different person on the outside versus the inside. When Miss Strangeworth was “Walking down Main Street on a summer morning, [she] had to stop every minute or so to say good morning to someone or to ask after someone’s health. When she came into the grocery, half a dozen people turned away from the shelves and counters to wave at her or call out good morning” (250). This quote shows how Miss Strangeworth is a seemingly nice lady, who is liked by many people. They don’t know who she…

In Aeschylus’s, Agamemnon I do believe the role of revenge is justified. Even with it being as sad as true, there is a special bond with mother and daughter that no one can ever break or come in between. In the play, if the chorus would’ve listen to Cassandra’s prophecy and took action from the jump, maybe this whole tragedy would be prevented. But since the words were spoken from the lips of a woman, they seem to have loss it’s meaning entirely and took for an awkward joke of some kind that no one would think to be true. Ironically, in life and in this story, the people who possess vital knowledge about survival are the main ones we seem to shrug off. Taking heed to our own knowledge and understanding can sometime lead to bad consequences as we have found out with the killing of Agamemnon by his beloved wife.…
