Review Of Clive Thompson's Smarter Than You Think
Clive Thompson’s “Smarter than You Think” takes a neutral yet optimistic stance on the way that Technology is impacting our lives. Although those like Postman have an apocalyptic view on the development of Technology and others like Manguel would argue that Technology is leading to a utopian world, Thompson both agrees and disagrees with these stances. What is most important is that we recognize that Technology will always have some impact on our mind but it is imperative that we become more aware of how it is happening. Thompson draws some parallels to Chapter 4 of Postman’s book when he recognizes that our technology, or tools, are everywhere and they transform how we learn, how we remember, and how we act upon knowledge emotionally, intellectually,

With technology comes great responsibility. By depending on technology one is becoming complacent and limiting one’s full potential to grasp new knowledge. This paper will analyze two articles discussed in class “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” by Malcolm Gladwell and “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr as well as WALL-E. Society at some point will become too dependent on technology without even realizing, affecting the way individuals communicate, think, and learn. In the text “Critical Thinking and The Techno-Brain,” Dr. Hiner describes how “we reside in a technological cave so pervasive, so distracting, and so enticing that its very presence in our lives often goes unnoticed” (214). This quotation drew my attention to the role that technology plays in our lives. Our world revolves around the use of technology and connecting to others by digital means. We are constantly glued to our phones and surrounded by images, social media applications, and family and friends who stay connected through the internet. The text made me contemplate the amount of time we spend on electronic devices and how we have become immersed in a digital world.…

Whereas I did not grow up with computers, but just introduced, my children are growing up with technology and computers at the forefront. It is becoming a necessity to know and understand the technological age. Postman has not convinced me that technology and computers are evil and destructive to the world, as I see things differently. I see the growing organizations that can now take their businesses globally due to the expansion in technology. I see the clothing industries, for instance, becoming more efficient and advanced by being able to create different looks and cuts and set distribution…

It’s understandable how important computers are in our life. However, we shouldn’t let them take over our life. “In the past the man has been first”, and it should stay like that. Yet, there are people who trust machines more than their fellow man. Carr believes that admiring modern technology is fine, but we should praise it. We are in charge of the computer, and not the other way around. The web should be used to deepen the thoughts of our brains instead of letting the shallowness of our thoughts deepen googles search…

To better understand how we relate ourselves to the technology we have nowadays and the technology that we have been exposed to in the past, we first analyze the book “Beyond Humanity” by Allen Buchanan. In this book, Buchanan explain enficices the idea that technological improvements are not new to us, he says “... to enhance human beings is to expand their capabilities- to enable them to do what normal human beings have hitherto not been able to do. Understood in this way, enhancement is ubiquitous in human history.” (Buchanan 38). These enhancements have always played a great role on our biological changes. For example, literature as one of these enhancements allowed us to communicate information more efficiently, it allowed us to store more information than our brains ever could; this came at a cost, because we are able to write down information or communicate it easier, our…

Mark Bauerlein notices “intellectual habits … slipping … each year” due to technological distractions (Source A). But thanks to the digital revolution, it’s now easier than ever to gather information, which has caused a lack of enthusiasm for intense research on a topic and gathering more information. Although this may be true in most cases, one can easily pursue a subject- it’s just a matter of desire. Sharon Begley states an issue on what’s meant by the “dumbest” and how there is no “empirical evidence” that technology impairs one’s thinking ability (Source B). There is nothing that identifies what “dumb” specifies, nor is there anything that undoubtedly confirms technology as a hindrance to one’s mental development. It’s only by one’s own will to venture out for knowledge and whether it’s used in an effective way.…

An online debate on the issue of technology affecting our life negativley or postivley, the pro point for technology brings up an interesting point , “For example, if you search something in the Internet, you will see tons of information about it, and some of that you could not find otherwise”. The Internet has helped our generation become significantly more knowledgeable, and all of the information that we have access to inspires us to apply ourselves further.…

Technology has been around humans since the cavemen days, but it undoubtedly took a huge turn in with the completion of the first ever computer. It has been nearly eighty years since then, and we have evolved even more, creating virtual reality simulations and touch screen tablets, in addition, we have access to literally anything with the internet. However, there is a strong argument from previous generations that this generation is becoming “dumber” due to the easy access and overreliance on technology for education, leading us to wonder whether technology is truly benefiting or harming this generation’s intelligence. While the author Mark Bauerlain believes that the arrival of technology has affected the way millennials think, making them “dumber”, technology has rather provided for us a more approachable, time-saving, and broader range of knowledge…

For instance, computers will be able to combine the traditional strengths of human intelligence. They will be able to master all the human skills and perform them without getting tired. Also multiple computers will have the power to become one and separate again. In “Meet Your iBrain: How Technology Changes the Way We Think,” Gary Small and Gigi Vorgan argue that people have changed in response to the use of technologies. Humans focus so much on technologies that they are forgetting social skills and losing touch with real people.…

Ever since the advent of the modern digital culture, there have been some heated discussions on the topic of whether technology is a foe or a friend. The antiquity of technology is as old as human life and the reason for this to be is that the usage of technology came into existence when the humans existed. Technology has had a prodigious progress since ages that is from mastery of fire by man to rockets, electronics, computers, and etc. The technologies that evolved in the past and even now have had made our lifespan contented where people nowadays are utterly dependent on the technology. According, to a dictionary the delineation of technology is given as “the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization” (“Technology,” 2013). This brings on to us that the technologies that we utilize has become as part of our being. However, the advancements in technologies have made an individual’s life easier, better, or comfortable; but on the other hand there are many negative impacts of technology that go through in their lives. In addition to that, there are several factors which supports that the technology has adverse effects on the society. In fact, technology is not always green; while new and rapidly advancing knowledge will assuredly become a dominant force in shaping the future of the mankind. As well, technology has blended in with daily activity to develop a way of life and certain individuals today take for granted all of which is automated. It is knowingly difficult for individuals including students to envision a world that existed without all those gadgets, electronics, and seamless operations computer technology provides. In many ways technology has improved one’s quality of life, but as with anything else; there are always some adversative aspects in using of technology. Individuals whom are considered to be high-school…

Opinions on the roles technologies have assumed in our lives vary greatly between individuals, but all most often question the potential effects it has on our brains and their functions. Some, like the author Nicholas Carr, see the change as a loss rather than a gain, and others, such as the Glass explorer Gary Shteyngart, are welcoming the change with open arms. Carr elaborates on his technological concerns in great detail in his 2008 article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” when he reveals personal realizations, references to research, scientific standpoints, as well as his own carefully constructed and researched theories. He gives a voice to concerns, such as the qualitative differences in how we think, read, and learn that we otherwise remain subconsciously unaware of. Shteyngart, however, has adopted nearly an entirely different viewpoint on the developing role of technology in our lives. In his 2012 article “O.K Glass”, he makes it evident that he has become fascinated by the futurism related directly to technology, and continues to willingly incorporate it into his life. Both of these writers meet at the intersection of a largely controversial argument between literacy and tech—not only where we’re heading, but where we already are. Likewise, as the advancement of technology continues to occur, both writers suggest that whether it becomes an advantage or a disadvantage is purely dependent upon the way in which it is applied.…
