The place is Spokane Indian reservation in Wellpinit, the protagonist of this novel is a boy named Arnold Spirit. This book illustrates his life and what was to happen in order for Arnold to succeed. Arnold is a boy born into an impecunious family and has to suffer through bullying and the effects of drugs and alcoholism throughout his family and his reservation. He is also forced into poor schooling and the effect of his condition, Hydrocephalus or as Arnold calls it on several occasions “water on the brain”. The ingredients used in this book would be the poverty-stricken reservation Arnold is forced to live in, and the attitude towards himself and his life and the poor education he is receiving at the beginning of the book. As stated by Arnold in “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” “My school and my tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from.” (PTI. 31)The goldilocks conditions would be Arnold`s old school teacher Mr. P who saw the potential that Arnold possessed and the advice he gave to Arnold about leaving the reservation to make a better life for himself and receive a better education. In The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian, Arnold`s teacher stated,“ If you stay on the rez, Mr. P said, they're going to kill you. I'm going to kill you. We’re all going to kill you. You can't fight us forever.” (PTI. 43) The new complex would be Arnold getting accepted into Reardon, receiving a better education and unlocking his full potential by being one of the smartest kids in the school and being a star on his basketball team.
