1. Define each of the following terms:
• autorhymicity- The heart is autorhythmic. This means it generates its own rhythmic action potential independent of the nervous system.
• sinoatrial node- is the impulse-generating (pacemaker) tissue located in the right atrium of the heart, and thus the generator of normal sinus rhythm.
• pacemaker cells- are specialized cells that cause involuntary muscles and tissues to contract or dilate.
• vagus nerves- carry a wide assortment of signals to and from the brain, and they are responsible for a number of instinctive responses in the body.
2. The sympathetic nervous system releases the neurotransmitter- Noradrenaline
3. The parasympathetic nervous system releases the neurotransmitter- endorphins and acetylcholine
4. Circle the correct boldfaced term.
The sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate.
The parasympathetic nervous system decreases heart rate.
5. What happens in each of the five phases of cardiac muscle depolarization?
PHASE0(RAPID DEPOLARIZATION) due to opening of fast voltage gated sodium channels
PHASE1(INITIAL REPOLARIZATION) due to closure of sodium channels while loss of potassium is goingon ,making the cell polarized.
PHASE2(PLATEAU)
due to opening of calcium channels. influx of calcium neutralizes the effect of out going potassium so prolonged plateau is achieved.
PHASE3(FINAL RE POLARIZATION) due to closure of calcium channels and continue loss of potassium makes the inside of cell more negative resulting in polarization.
PHASE4(RMP)
eventually cell returns to resting membrane potential due to K efflux and cell is ready for next cycle

6. Explain why the SA node generates action potentials at a frequency of approximately 100 beats per minute even though the average resting heart rate is 70 beats per minute.

The average heart rate is lower than the sinoatrial node's ability to generate action

    11. Describe the pathway of conduction from the atria to the ventricles and correlate this conduction with the ECG waves. The SA node is designated as the pacemaker of the heart. From the SA node, the electrical impulse spreads through interatrial tracts that spread the electrical impulse through the right and left atria and therefore cause atrial depolarization. As a result, a P-wave is observed. After the atria depolarize, the electrical impulse spreads through the internodal tracts and reach the atrioventricular node (AV node). The AV node has its own pacing rhythm that serves as a back up pacemaker in case the SA node fails to initiate an electrical impulse. Consequently, the AV node slows down the electrical impulse to allow the atria to project their blood into the ventricles. From the AV node, the impulse travels through the bundle of His, which bifurcate into the left and right bundle branches. From the branches, the impulse travels through the Purkinje fibers and allows the electrical impulse to end…

Cycles can be seen even at a molecular level in the body. An example of this would include the passage of action potentials down neurones in the nervous system. When the cell membrane is at its resting potential, the sodium potassium pump is turned off. When a stimulus is applied to a neurone, the resting potential is (-70mV) is reversed – this is the action potential (depolarisation). The energy of the stimulus causes the intrinsic sodium voltage-gated channels to open, allowing sodium ions to diffuse into the axon along their electrochemical gradient. Entry of these Na+ ions causes the inside of the axon to be less negative. As threshold is reached, there is a greater influx of sodium ions and the potential difference increases to +40mV, so the inside is positive, and the outside is negative. This is when the sodium channels start to close and the voltage-gated potassium channels begin to open, so the K+ ions move out of the axon. Therefore, the potential difference begins to drop and the sodium ions are pumped out, and the potassium ions back in, and the membrane returns to its resting potential. This is a cycle because this process repeats every time a nerve impulse is passed down the axon, and is important as it allows the action potential to be passed along the axon.…
